Exterior description – East Lake

The East lake community is one of the most historic communities in Atlanta.East lake has been around since the late 1800’s and has changed not only the community themselves but Atlanta as a whole. The site is located in East Atlanta , Georgia  which is only about 5 miles from downtown Atlanta. The east lake timeline starts from apps ration owned by Robert Alston in the 1850’s from a amusement park which later on failed because of a the recession in the late 1800’s to a golf course ( which is still present to this day) to low income housing known as “lil viteman ” to a present day small community with a layout of a publix , their own Marta station , food places , housing ,schools and YMCA tobacco date the East lake residents. The present artifacts that are shown when some, one is visiting the East lake community is a grocery store , gas stations  which are located on the end of east lake (Glenwood Ave.) and the YMCA located at the beginning of east lake on memorial drive. The east lake housing sits right in the middle of the two major road , Memorial drive and Glenwood Ave. which includes a pool , a rent office and two playgrounds. When I visited East Lake I noticed how spacious the housing and businesses were from each other , which is rare to find in the city of Atlanta. If one is driving or walking , all the necessities are in walking distances and they have bus stops all throughout the community of east lakes. When i visited the community I took note to the color scheme of the space  and for some reason the color green was catching my eye. I was observing East lake green trees and spacious green grass and hills , their green spacious golf course and their set of apartments called “green side ” which had tons of green space for their residents to enjoy. I noticed the publix green color scheme as well , the logo and lining of the word publix was outlined in green. When I visit the site I felt a warm welcoming feeling because some of the residents was very friendly and I seen a lot of people walKing their dogs and kids playing at the playground. I felt like I could see my self living in this community.East Lake is in there own world , they have everything their residents need or want. The east lake community is a site that is used for their residents and everything that has been built or set in place is for the use of the residents of the community. In closing , East lake is a beneficial and confident place to live in and it advertise that by purposely building the YMCA , grocery stores , school and places to live to convince  someone that doesn’t live there that this place has everything they need to satisfy them. The site targets it’s Intented users by using signs in the front of the east lake apartments displaying ” specials on apartments ” to persuade them to be apart of the East lake community.

Interior built environment

The famous burger joint , The vortex is one of the most famous restaurants in downtown Atlanta. The vortex was established on April 20,1992 on west Peach-tree street. The restaurant was owned by Michael Benoit , his sister Susanne and brother Hank. The place started our as a tiny restaurant and bar on Peach tree street but Now the business has blossomed into a redesigned and unique restaurant in two locations , ( one in midtown and one in five points) and has earned their rank in becoming Best Beer Selection,” “Best Neighborhood Bar,” “Best Overall Liquor Selection in Atlanta,” “Best Bar Food,” and “One of the Top 50 Restaurants in Atlanta.” When I visited the site , I’ve noticed their designs and their “rock and roll” theme with skulls and the variety of liquor on the bar table. The bar was set up in the back of the restaurant , with a street sign saying “2nd avenue ” by the bar. The inside of the vortex consisted of chairs and tables , the bar and the lights were dim to give off a relax , party type vibe. The site wasn’t easy to navigate because the restaurant wasn’t really that big and there was a small path to the bar and everything was really close together. The vortex color scheme consisted of dark colors such as red and black which gave me a rock star/club vibe. Throughout my experience at the vortex it made me feel like I was in  club because the music was loud , It was filled with people , people were drunk , and the lights were dim with colored lights. The sites is intended for people 21 years of age and older , and the site is used  by the younger crowd. The site advertise its users by promoting there famous burgers and their popular alcohol. In conclusion , the site target their customers by promoting the sell of alcohol and the food on their menus.

http://www.atlanta.k12.ga.us/ interior description

Atlanta public school website is a institutional website that encourages parents to get involved in their children education , provides the latest news in the Atlanta school district , and to encourage the students to engage themselves in summer learning activities , and tutorials to make sure they excel in school. The Atlanta Public School is a digital websites , but their corporate business is located in downtown Atlanta at 130 Trinity Ave . The site was created in 2008 and the things I’ve noticed from the site is that they have a warm welcome for kids because they display a lot of children on their site. What I’ve also noticed is that this website is more of a business than a friendly/ school orientated website because the site puts their achievements and awards on the top of the screen to persuade the audience ( which are mostly parents ) on how well their school system is . Under the achievements the site has a small box that says ” ENROLL NOW IN SUMMER CLASSES” with a kid standing behind the box smiling to convince the readers that their child will benefit or enjoy from the summer program. The site have small digital sections that offers tutorials and “homework helplines ” for students that struggles in school to let the parents or the audience know that they care about their child success and that the Atlanta public school system is where there child should be. The layout of the site consists of today’s date in the top right corner , the site’s name in the middle of the top screen and on the left side of the website , there’s a active Twitter feed of people engaging in new ideas on how to make the APS system better. When discovering the layout of the site I noticed the color scheme as well. The colors is blue and orange which are bright colors that could represent bright kids and bright school careers. When a parent discovers the site , one could be more likely to continue the navigate the site because of the bright colors rather than dark colors such ass black and gray. When I discovered the website it was fairly easy to navigate because the site had tabs at the top of the screen to guide a parent on a specific topic they was looking for , and the had tabs on the left side of the screen to labeled as “quick link” to navigate the reader into a off topic but relevant issue such as bus routes , cafeteria health scores , and more. The site does have a lot going on because the site has many slideshows playing at once which could distract the reader but the site is helpful for finding topics and issues. The site uses there tabs and quick links to help the people who use the site , which is mostly the parents to get information about their child school system or to possibly enroll their child into this school system. The site is used for informational, educational purposes , and to engage the parents to become more active in their child school life. When I discovered the site , I felt Comfortable because I felt like the websites was a trustworthy website and that they really care about children success in school.I chose the word comfortable to explain that I trusted the website and that I could persuade my mom or others who have young children pro check out the website. In conclusion the site adversities it’s user by , by using the smiling children to demonstrate the success and fun they have at Atlanta public schools , and signals their intended users by displaying their success and accomplishments at the top screen big and clear to persuade the parents that the Atlanta Public School System is right for their child.

The power of B , Downtown Atlanta (Exterior )

Many people underestimate the power of the B. The big B , is what makes the physical shape of Atlanta . The big B’s is what makes spaces like Atlanta , New York , and other sites very attractive and popular. One may ask what is the big B ? Well , the big b are the buildings. These buildings may not speak but they create a lot of noise. In other words the buildings are what make and break cities , businesses , and other areas. places such as Lenox mall take shapes in Atlanta by being one of the most popular malls in Georgia , and is a reason why many tourist come to the mall and shop. Buildings like QuikTrip (whom I work for) purposely build their buildings around highways (which is considered a built environment) because they know that Highways are used by a lot of people and if a driver needs gas they would most likely come to QuikTrip for their convenience. I could go on and on about Built environments taking their shape in Atlanta because many decisions that people make to move , travel , and shop are based off of the reputations of the buildings. in addition , Buildings can create barriers that can eliminate certain people in their environments. Many people underestimate the power of buildings , however the Built environments of Atlanta such as the Colleges , major businesses and establishments , has a lot of control and influence of the popularity , the business investments, the type of people , the influence of restaurants ,residents and housing , and the influences of volume that take place in this environments. The buildings are what make Atlanta , not the people.

Popularity

Why is that Atlanta is one of  the number one places to visit and travel? why is Atlanta so busy and filled with people ? Atlanta’s popularity and rank comes from the built environments that was placed there. So many people visit Atlanta because Atlanta offers a lot of attractions such as , movies , skating rinks , major shopping centers such as Atlantic station , Lenox mall , and Philips plaza , recording studios and unique and quality housing and hotels for tourists and others to enjoy while they here. these built environments come together to persuade someone that Atlanta is the ideal place to live. Their popularity is also based of their convenience. The major highways such as interstate 85 , 75 , and 20 goes through Atlanta which could explains the high volume in tourist. In addition to that , once you reached Atlanta everything is located near or in Atlanta which explains why many people move there as well.

Business investments

throughout my research , I have concluded that reason that many investors start new business in Atlanta is because of the location of the environment and once again the influences of other popular environments in Atlanta. for example if you were taking a trip to Atlanta , and you were hungry and seen a new restaurant right by your favorite shopping center , since the new business was conveniently located by your favorite shopping center you would be more likely to try and visit the new restaurant. Evermore , most people start businesses in Atlanta because of the transportation such as Marta train stations which give people easy access to visit their business if they decided to create one. business investors also see that establish environments such as Coca cola , Delta , AT&T and many more ,could help or promote their business or better yet invest in their business as well. According to the geek wire , Atlanta tops the list of best places to start a business with a overall score of  68%.  nerdwalletstartbusiness

Type of people

The type of people that visits Atlanta is heavily influenced on once again the built environment. Atlanta is filled with many ethnic groups and different economic classes because of the variety of activities and different events in Atlanta. The foreigners however , attracts to Atlanta because the airport is located there and Atlanta is their first stop. Even though Atlanta is filled with diverse people , to live downtown is quite expensive , which excludes minorities and lower class people to live there. The expensive restaurants’ and shopping centers could very  well play a role in excluding people with less money to visit Atlanta or stay in Atlanta as often as high class people. The businesses in Atlanta do draft a lot young graduates since colleges like Georgia Tech , Emory , Georgia state , Spelman , Clark Atlanta , and Morehouse are located in the heart of Atlanta. In conclusion , the type of people in Atlanta explains why mostly high classes stay downtown Atlanta , and people often see younger graduates working for some of the major businesses in Atlanta as well.

     Moving to Atlanta

Many people move to Atlanta because the Atlanta is the ideal place to live. Thanks to the built environments in Atlanta , many people are aware of the convenience of stores , available jobs , transportation and malls. The built environments such as housing are purposely built by the major attractions such as Atlantic station , buck head and Phillips plaza to influences people that love to shop or who works to their to move closer to that area. Even though , Atlanta is a convenient and nice place to live the built environment still influences a certain crowd to live downtown Atlanta because the apartments are priced higher to exclude certain people such as minorities to live in the downtown area. In conclusion , the built environments are built and designed to exclude people , however , if one can afford to stay in downtown Atlanta , they build the housing by attractions and accomdies so people will be more willing to live there.

Atlanta’s high volume

Atlanta high volume comes from the exciting attractions , businesses , and events that happens in Atlanta. The Georgia dome ( which is currently under construction ) host major football games ,and events like the battle of the bands , and turner field has very popular baseball games as well. Lenox mall , and Atlanta station is one of the reasons for Atlanta growing population , and the expansion of apartments and housing in Atlanta. The popular restaurants , Houston’s , the vortex , maggiano’s , and many more also play a role in the volume of Atlanta. The park , centennial park and Piedmont park provides green space for tourist if they want to work out , or enjoy themselves at the park. there many things to do in Atlanta , not only that , Atlanta is their own little world with a lot of attractions and events going its hard to not to want to visit Atlanta!

The creation of restaurant’s

The creation of restaurants is the final touch on Atlanta. Many people love to eat and they intentionally visit Atlanta just to go out to eat. The restaurants take their shape in Atlanta by placing themselves in the heart of Atlanta by MAJOR attractions such as Lenox , Atlantic station , and other events to physiologically  persuade tourist and visitors to eat at their restaurants for the convenience. There are a lot of restaurants that are being created , because investors see that people love restaurants. In conclusion , built environments such as restaurants persuade people to visit Atlanta.

As I mentioned earlier in my analysis , Built environments typically goes unnoticed because  many people don’t pay attention to how built environments uses their buildings to determine the people and surroundings of a site. Buildings may involuntary segregate people of a lower class to come in their space by refusing to have public transportation in certain areas or to build a bridge very low so that buses couldn’t travel to and from the locations. Buildings in general influences people to move in a certain area, and also influences crime in certain areas to. Buildings that are made and sold cheaper usually attract high crime and minorities while expensive buildings attract the higher class and low crime. One should always keep in mind that built environments has a huge impact on people physically and psychologically. Just think , would you go to a built environment such McDonald’s if the environment was built poorly and the opposite direction on where you was going ? or would you live in a area that you like but it  was expensive , and a hour away from your job ? Built environments and locations is the reasons that some businesses fail and some business flourish. throughout my research and assignments from annotated bibliographies on Lenox , Atlanta station ,and the National historic site, reading summaries such as   “Architectural Exclusion: Discrimination And Segregation Through Physical Design Of The Built Environment.” ,Tapestry Of Space: Domestic Architecture And Underground Communities In Margaret Morton’s Photography Of A Forgotten New York.”  and The Tunnel : The Underground Homeless Of New York City , and the built environments description has came together to conclude that buildings have more power than you think. the buildings in Atlanta is purposely designed to influence people to visit Atlanta , move to Atlanta , spend money and create businesses in Atlanta. In addition the purpose of this assignment is to understand the space in Atlanta and how these buildings come together to give Atlanta their title and their rank of being one of the most popular sites to visits.

“12 Things to Know about Lenox Square Mall.” AJC.com: Atlanta News, Sports, Atlanta Weather, Business News. AJC, 27 July 2009. Web. 16 Apr. 2016.
Lenox Square Mall is a high end shopping center in the heart of downtown Atlanta , ranking in the top best malls of Georgia. Celebrities such as Rihanna , Yung Thug , and Beyonce  has visited the mall which played a role in Lenox hype and popularity. Lenox mall was opened in 1959 by Ed Noble, the grandson of a wealthy Oklahoma oilman. The place started from 74-acres of a local home which was later sold to build the infamous Lenox mall. The article , “12 Things To Know about Lenox Square Mall”briefly explains the small but interesting facts about the people , stores, and history of the shopping center. Lenox did not  always have the high end retail stores like Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors. Instead , it held a Walgreen’s , a movie theater , bowling alley , and more. Furthermore, according to AJC , 40 percent of Lenox customers are tourists , which leads to my conclusion on how built environments can take shape within Atlanta by attracting many tourist and foreigners from across the world to visit the up-scale shopping center. This built environment plays a huge role in Atlanta by increasing customers to move near the attraction , for entrepreneurs to build high end restaurants , and homes to comfort the customers, and for transportation companies such as Marta to have easy train and bus access inside the mall to influence more volume not only in their mall but around downtown Atlanta as a whole.
Clanton, Nancy. “7 Atlanta Locations Called Overrated.” AJC.com: Atlanta News, Sports, Atlanta Weather, Business News. 19 Jan. 2016. Web. 16 Apr. 2016.
Lenox Square Mall is known for its popularity and hype , which makes its believable to understand why the shopping center has made the top 7 overrated places in Atlanta by AJC. Lenox Mall is one of the most popular shopping center in Georgia , and some of its “fame” has come from known rappers promoting the mall in their songs , and from high end celebrities visiting the mall themselves. Lenox attracts their customers by their their spacious and nicely designed interior ,  which takes over about 74 acres. Furthermore , the mall hold about every store from high end retailers such as Gucci and Louis VUITTON to the more affordable  retailers such as Forever 21 and Rue 21. Even though the mall holds their crown for being one of the best malls in Georgia , they placed number 5 of being the most overrated places in Atlanta according to AJC. AJC explains that they have surveyed people across Atlanta to  decipher the most overrated places in Atlanta and explains that Lenox mall , is just another jammed pack mall. which concludes to how built environments can influence the volume of customers just by their popularity and how the mall can psychologically make people think that the mall is overrated just by their “jammed packed parking lots” and reputation.
Mckay, John. “The Birth of Lenox Square Mall.” Examiner.com. 7 July 2012. Web. 16 Apr. 2016.
The history of Lenox Mall shows how the Mall came from a cotton and corn farm ,to a known upscale shopping center in under 20 years. Before Lenox mall , the 74 acre space was filled by a farm owned by John Simpkins who witness and escaped the wrath of General William Sherman in 1864. Simpkins continues to live on his farm after the waft but later sold his property in 1897 before his passing in 1926. He sold his farm to the president of First National Bank of Atlanta , John Ottley , who envisioned a potential summer home on a hill to escape the noise and population in Atlanta. Ottley built the amazing 12 room summer house called Joyeuse which was used to throw parties and ballrooms until he passed in 1945. From there , the summer home was soon reused for small businesses and apartments for wartime veterans. On May 22, 1956 the property was resold again to ED Noble who seen the potential of a future high end mall called Lenox square. Noble and his architects soon began to work on the the design of Lenox square. First , they flatten out the hill where the summer home and apartments took place to level out the land. Then they built the Mall with a bowling alley , and indoor golf range to attract new customers to the attraction. Despite the warnings many investors seen by creating Lenox mall by stating that “no one lived out here ” (Mckay ) , Noble still decided to open lenox square mall on August 3, 1959. Lenox was not as popular and upscale as it is today. “It was more like an extended and multi-leveled strip mall, with an open center court decorated by flying concrete buttress-styled arches, over grassy areas flanked by concrete benches, and several small collections of sculptures depicting Southern folk tales”.(Mckay). Today ,Lenox is more than a shopping center than a attraction site , and is know for their high end stores and fancy restaurants. In conclusion , the once cotton farm where “nobody lived at ” is the home of the infamous Lenox Mall which attracts residents , business opportunities , and many tourist from the United States. Lenox is a prime example on how built environments can influence the volume of a city and the the type of customers that visit Lenox on the daily basis.
Mitchell, Wright. “Lenox Square Site Once Was the Home of Great Joy.” Reporter Newspapers. 03 June 2010. Web. 16 Apr. 2016.
Before the High end shopping center , Lenox Square’s land was once owned by a wealthy man named John Ottley who used the land as a summer house called Joyeuse back in the late 1800’s. Before Lenox , Ottley build the property to get away from the city , because back then Buck head was classified as the “suburbs”. Ottley and his family used the house for ball rooms and parties and loved the house so much that they permanently moved in the house in 1913. During their stay the house was occupied by 12 marvelous rooms and had a stable full of “sporty horses” in the backyard. The interior and exterior design was built beautifully as the front porch made with red tile that continued the length of the house which led to the front entrance. “The interior of the home was like a scene from “The Great Gatsby.” The walls were heavily beamed in dark wood, and a large library dominated the front of the house” (Wright). The Ottley’s  stayed in the house until Ottley death in 1945 , and from then entrepreneur Ed Noble quickly designed the later on upscale mall. In conclusion , The Up bringing of the built environment (Lenox square ) , has turned Buck Head from being a quiet suburban area to a busy and noisy urban area known today.
