Lamiyah Mussaji was born in Mississauga, Canada but was raised in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Lamiyah’s interest in Neuroscience sparked during her junior year of high school when she took her favorite class, AP Psychology. She immediately became fascinated with brain development and behavior and was excited to learn more about this captivating field. Lamiyah is currently a sophomore attending Georgia State University majoring in Neuroscience with a premedical concentration. During her freshman year of college, she was eager to get hands on experience with the field of Neuroscience research to really get the feel of what it’s all about. She began working with the Forger lab and has been assisting with her birth project. The lab is interested in learning about how the gut microbiota affects early brain development. Lamiyah’s research experience thus far has been intriguing, captivating, and life changing. Each day in the lab is a new learning experience for her. She became especially surprised with how little we know about our brain and hopes to learn more about how the brain influences our bodies. She also wants to learn about different ways to prevent mental illnesses. After graduating, Lamiyah aspires to go to medical school and become a pediatrician. She believes medical attention is extremely important, and that everyone deserves medical treatment despite their socioeconomic backgrounds. However, she also loves the neuroscience research field and wants to build on to the new discoveries found in the field, so she is strongly considering applying to an MD/PhD program. She believes doing so will allow her to blend her passion for medicine and neuroscience research together, attaining the best of both worlds. In her free time, Lamiyah enjoys reading novels, traveling, and spending time with her family. She loves exploring the world and getting to know new people and different cultures.
