Session Descriptions – Spring 2017

Preparing your GSURC Poster or Oral submission

Presenter: Mallory McKenzie

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Date and Time: Wednesday, January 18, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

Come learn how to prepare and submit your research for your poster or oral presentation at GSURC (the Georgia State Undergraduate Research Conference). Hear about the ways to present your research, the changes to the GSURC submission process and tips for helping your research look polished!

Writing a Stellar Research Proposal and Abstract

Presenter: Dr. Allen Fromherz

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Date and Time: Tuesday, January 24, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

The research proposal can be the most difficult part of the research process, but it can also be the most important part. Questions such as “what is a research proposal” and “what are the essential elements of a proposal” will be answered. By the end of this session, students will have the knowledge to write a compelling research proposal.

Preparing your GSURC Artistic Research submission

Presenter: Dr. Kevin Hsieh

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Date and Time: Wednesday, February 1, 12 – 1 pm

Come learn how to prepare and submit your artistic research for presentation at GSURC (the Georgia State Undergraduate Research Conference). Hear about the ways to present your research, the changes to the GSURC submission process, installation of your work, and tips for helping your research look polished!

I wasn’t always Dr.__________

Presenter: Dr. Marise Parent

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Date and Time: Tuesday, February 7, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

Do you have a research idea but you do not know where to start? Does the thought of approaching a faculty member intimidate you? This session will provide you with information on taking the first steps on your journey as a scholar and researcher. Students will learn about Honors College opportunities and the published benefits of undergraduate research.

Secrets to Library Success

Presenter: Ida Martinez

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Date and Time: Thursday, February 9, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

Students will learn about essential library resources and services to support Honors College students. The session will include a hands-on opportunity on how to efficiently search scholarly databases to locate the highest quality sources of information for research assignments. Also, this workshop informs

students about useful programs that will help them store and organize their research sources. The session will cover programs such as Zotero, EndNote, and Mendeley.

Thin Line Between Citing and Plagiarism

Presenter: Dr. Charlotte Alexander

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Date and Time: Tuesday, February 14, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

A “citation” is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source (plagiarism.org). “But what if I read something and then summarize it in my own words? Do I include a citation for that?” Knowing when and how to include citations in your writing can be confusing. This workshop will discuss guidelines for citing works and constructing a reference page.

Talking the Talk: How to Present at a Conference (Poster and Oral)

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Presenters, Date and Time

Wednesday, March 8 (Poster), 12:00 – 1:00 pm (Dr. Eric Gilbert)

Wednesday, March 8 (Poster), 5:00 – 6:00 pm (Dr. Jan Ligon)

Thursday, March 9 (Oral), 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm (Dr. Charlotte Alexander)

Thursday, March 9 (Oral), 5:00 – 6:00 pm (Amy Salter)

One of the best ways to gain a deeper understanding of your research topic is to become an expert in articulating that topic. Conferences are opportunities to explain your topic to individuals familiar with your subject and those who are not. It is also an opportunity for you to network with students, staff, and faculty in your field. In this session, students will learn how to enhance presentation skills and how to conduct themselves at a conference.

How to Publish your Research

Presenter: Laura Burtle

Where: Honors College, Room 223

Date and Time: Tuesday, March 14, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

You’ve put a lot of work into your undergraduate research, and want to share it! We’ll cover what you need to consider for publishing in any journal, as well as the specifics of publishing in DISCOVER, the Honors College Undergraduate Research Journal.

Undergraduate Student Write-In

Presenters: Jacob English

Where: Honors College, Rooms 224 and 201

Date and Time: Friday, March 24, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

The Write-In is a one-day workshop designed to help honors students break through writing barriers by helping them set reasonable writing goals, and establish good writing habits. The Write-In is an excellent opportunity to work on a GSURC presentation, an honors thesis, or a thesis proposal. Writing consultants will be available for one-on-one editorial advice and counsel, with a focus likely more on style, tone, grammar, and organization rather than discipline-specific content. The Honors College will provide a light breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

GSURC Meet and Greet and Conference Presentation Practice

Where: Honors College, Northside Lounge and Room 201

Date and Time: March 30, 4:00- 6:00 pm

Our GSURC Student Planning Committee will be hosting a casual meet and greet as an opportunity to introduce student presenters to one another, to the Student Planning Committee members, and the GSURC Faculty Advisory Board.

Also, students presenting at GSURC or another local, national, or international conference have the opportunity to practice their presentation and receive feedback from a panel of staff and students. Sign-up for an opportunity to work some of the “kinks” out of your presentation. The Honors College will offer thirty-minute time slots for you to practice your presentation in front of Honors College staff and your peers and receive feedback. RSVP is required to ensure that you are allotted enough time to practice and receive feedback.
