Undergraduate Degree Requirements

A grade of C or higher in English 1101 and 1102 or the equivalent from another university is required for all people who would take any Advanced Composition and Rhetoric courses or Technical and Professional Writing courses. If you are planning to Major in English and concentrate in this area, you are required to take English 3050, Introduction to Rhetoric as early as possible. The department requires a minimum of twenty-seven semester hours in upper-division English, with no more than eleven being transferred credits. The College of Arts and Sciences requires that students pass all upper-division courses in their majors with a grade of C or higher.

Rhetoric and Composition Concentration

Students who concentrate in advanced composition and rhetoric learn about the history, theory, and practice of writing to specific audiences for particular purposes. In this concentration, students may focus on either historical rhetoric and the teaching of composition or writing within business and technical environments. Courses in this area allow students to explore the history and theory of writing as they apply to the teaching of composition and to writing practices in the workplace.
