PURCELL, M. (2014). POSSIBLE WORLDS: HENRI LEFEBVRE AND THE RIGHT TO THE CITY. Journal Of Urban Affairs,

“So the urban as a possible world is in part something in the future, an imagined society that is yet to come.”

This quote relates to how urban areas are disconnected from other communities and the author feels that it will never be a connection.

“I will expand on the last two rights in a moment, but first let me say a bit more about how Lefebvre understands rights. For Lefebvre formal, legal rights are never God-given, nor are they natural rights that the framers of constitutions simply write down. Rather rights are always the outcome of political struggle. They are the manifestation, the end result of collective claims made by mobilized citizens. Because they result from struggle, they are always subject to further struggle, to renewed political agitation. This way of viewing rights means that for Lefebvre the point of proposing the new rights in the contract is prefigurative: they are political claims to possible rights that will require mobilization and struggle.”

Important words

Rights – A moral or legal entitlement to have or obtain something or to act in a certain way.

Legal Rights- Affect every citizen, whether or not the existence such rights is publicly known.

Natural Rights -Rights that people supposedly have under natural law. The Declaration of Independence of the United States lists life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as natural rights.

Manifestation- An event, action, or object that clearly shows or embodies something, especially a theory or an abstract idea

Collective claims-Relating to, or being a group of individuals b : involving all members of a group as distinct from its individuals

Rights are important because rights derived from struggle if it wasn’t for the struggle of Americans rights did not exist .For example slavery is a perfect example of how Americans struggle and rights where put into place for that particular incident.

Group discussion on Quote number 1 from “PURCELL, M. (2014). POSSIBLE WORLDS: HENRI LEFEBVRE AND THE RIGHT TO THE CITY. Journal Of Urban Affairs, 36(1), 141-154″

“The Law asserts that property are no longer more important than other concerns. They are still firmly, but how they must co exist with social value. They are contingent on whether the prospered development provides an adequate contribution to social needs. (141)

words that we thought was important with helping explain the meaning of the quote

social use value – Larger concept which includes social capital as well as the subjective aspects of the citizens’ well-being, such as their ability to participate in making decisions that affect them.

contingent- subject to chance

social needs- are things such as acceptance, appreciation, belonging and companionship essentially, social needs are met by forgiving relationships with other people.

we interpreted the quote as property rights are important but not really so much important because their only taking into consideration as any other law in place. such as jay walking everybody do it when walking across the street without people any general though into it.

Inductive reasoning activity 3.7

Sitting at west end park I felt welcomed I felt free, The birds chirped the sun rose the wind blowed. The bugs flew around through the park. I heard kids running around and laughing. The ice cream truck rode through the neighborhood as the kids ran with excitement to the ice cream truck. Dogs played fetch with their owners. The park made me think about how it can be a warm welcoming place it has so many activity to do softball game, kickball game, basketball game, and takes walks around the park. The smell of the park seem so fresh did not change much of the environment but it welcomed all the guess as well as the sun. It was a little league baseball game that has been going on at the moment. There was a tennis team practicing going against one another, the ice cream circled the park as children ran with their arm up hoping that the ice cream truck will stop after they had all ready missed him the first time around. Typically many families go to the park to have a family picnic some even watch the little league baseball game, some watched their children at the park some were even walking their dogs at the park. Many things can happen at a park such as, concerts, basketball games or even baseball games, and softball games.

As I Sat at Oak St SW, It was about 4:45 in the afternoon.  I was surrounded by a large amount of big brown trees with rough skin and was tall and huge. There where plenty of nice shade under the trees to have a family picnic. The mint green grass cover the whole entire park. The sun was shining so bright I could tell that it was the beginning of a new season. First thing I saw when I was walking to the park was the west end park sign and the little green bushes in front of it.It was a concrete sidewalk that traveled throughout the park as a walk way. The park had a dog waste station but no dog specifically for dogs . It was a big tall green metal pole that held a sign that stated “pet waste station” “Please clean up after your pet”. The sign indicated that pets are welcome and allowed as long as one can keep the area clean by cleaning up behind their pet. The pretty browns leaves covered the park That showed different color patterns that correlated with green grass. The tennis court was surrounded by a silver bob wire that was binned together to created a pattern of diamonds that created the gate. As i walked on the side walked that traveled through the park one can tell that it is old by the residue that was left on the side in the grass. The basketball court was surrounded by a binned gate and in the inside it was white lines that cover the court that tells each special positions on the court. Each end of the basketball court had two big poles with a basket connected to the top of the pole.
