About 42.2 million (13.4%) of the United States population is food insecure (3).

Of that population, 13.1 million (17.9%) are children.

The number of people who are malnourished and are deprived of access to nutrition in the world increased from 804 million in 2016 to 821 million in 2017 (4).

Food insecurity is typical in low-income or no-income households, simply because some individuals and families are unable to afford nourishing produce. Additionally, children and the elderly, and ethnic and racial minority groups are often increasingly at risk for food insecurity (5).
