She starts her first section of with stories of Bernard, Bob and a few other occupants of the North gate. Bernard shares with Morton that living under ground is the greatest thing that he’s ever done and he doesn’t regret choosing to spend his life under there. He also shared an instance where people from the outside world tried to stop the tunnel livers from staying there. Bernard discovered a runoff of clean water in the tunnel and it was not long before the water access was cut off purposely to hinder the occupants.bernard1

Within the Alcoves and Ledges section, a man by the name of Marcos is introduced and he tells his story of how he ends up in the tunnel and how the believes that the tunnel should be called the “freedom tunnel”. Many time throughout the book, occupants of the tunnel have described the tunnel in a positive light and have expressed how the tunnel has given them freedom. For example, Ramón from the South end section expresses how homelessness is not the problem because he has a home, he has food, and he has most things he needs. He states that the only problem he deals with is loneliness. He also states that people from the outside get the misinterpretation that you’re not a real person just because you are homeless. Although they are not really homeless in the first place. Two other occupants from the South end have actually built their homes with walls and bricks to keep them safe. For example, Esteban was a carpenter before he started living in the tunnel, however his documents were stolen and he was no longer able to work. José also build his home and has privacy, food, water and many other things in his home that help him survive. He expressed to Morton that he has no reason to leave the tunnel and never will. Many of the tunnel dwellers plan to stay in this tunnel however, many efforts have been made to rid of residents. For example, David also a resident of the South end how he’s been staying the tunnel for three years but never leaves anything that he cares about in the tunnel. His reasoning behind this comes from the fact that young people like to destroy and burn things within the tunnel. However, the young people are not the only one’s doing the destruction. The New York authorities have issued an eviction notice to the tunnel people and will come in and tare down everything that they spent their precious time and effort to create.
