Decatur Writers Group Meetings this Fall

The Decatur Writers Group would like to invite all interested students, faculty, staff and community members who share a love of writing to bring up to five double-spaced pages of their creative writings, at any stage of the writing process, to share with group members for critique.

The group will also host guests from the professional writing community to share relevant information on the journey from novice writer to published author.

October Meetings will be held on the 7th and 21st. In November, the group will convene on the 11th and 18th. The group meets in the Decatur Campus Learning and Tutoring Center,  Room SF 1200 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on these dates. All meetings are free and open to the general public.

October 2016 Writers’ Circle Meetings

If you are interested in writing and are looking for support and feedback from other writers you are welcome and encouraged to attend The Writers’ Circle hosted by the Learning & Tutoring Center at Perimeter College. All meetings are free and open to the public.

At the sessions, writers read from works in progress and offer critiques for every stage of the writing process, from nurturing an idea into gestation  to achieving its publication.  To broaden and enhance the writing experience, the group also hosts guest professionals such as editors, instructors, and published authors.

This month, The Writers’ Circle meets officially on October 7 and 21 in Building LRC (the library) on the Dunwoody Campus from 1 – 3 p.m. in room 3100.

On October 14 and 28, a group of “renegades” from The Writers’ Circle will meet at the Panera Bread on 1625 Mt. Vernon in Dunwoody, GA, from 1 – 3 p.m.

Faculty Development Days – Call for Proposals

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning-Perimeter College will be hosting Faculty Development Days on two Friday mornings this semester.  These days will provide an opportunity for faculty to share ideas about any teaching/learning strategies they’ve been using in the classroom. Faculty Development Days will compensate for the loss the centralized Faculty Development Day on the Clarkston campus (during those “student study days” we no longer see on our semester schedules).

The call for proposals seeks presentations about “engaging students, assessing student learning, e-learning/e-books, tying course materials to relevant life and educational experiences, motivating a diverse student body, etc.”  You may submit a proposal HERE.

Proposals are due by 5pm on Sept. 27, 2016 for the Oct. 14th FDD, and Oct. 21, 2016 for the Nov. 11 FDD.

Currently, two events are planned and all faculty are welcome to attend either event. To register for these events please fill out the brief form

STEAM, not STEM! Call for proposals.

The Georgia State University, Perimeter College’s popular STEM Talks series will begin soon with a new letter added to include the Arts! The new STEAM Talks hosts are requesting proposals for lectures that will bring “awareness to the multitude of ways Art is connected to and involved in traditional STEM fields” which encompasses not only the visual arts but also music, film, and literature.

Existing talks or lectures in this area are welcome and you don’t have to have any prior STEM knowledge to be an effective presenter. All talks will be recorded through Blackboard Collaborate. The talks are typically 40 – 50 minutes long.

With as little as 2-3 weeks notice, your presentation can typically be scheduled on your home campus in the early afternoon. Although at least 2-3 weeks notice is required, additional time is beneficial to provide for sufficient publicity. Your proposed talk will likely be able to take place on your home campus (usually in the early afternoon to avoid travel during rush hour) and all you would do is give your talk in a classroom using the classroom computer and projection system like you normally do while teaching.

Art exhibition on view in Clarkston library through Oct 14

An exhibition of works by artists Vickie Bethel, Lucy Hale, and Loretta Paraguassu will be on view in the “What is Seen” exhibition in the 4th floor, LRC Art Gallery, on the Clarkston campus of Georgia State University, Perimeter College.

The show will run from August 22 through October 14th. A reception will be held on September 22, in the gallery from 6 – 8 p.m. The exhibition is part of the Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival.

The LRC Art Gallery gallery is located on the 4th floor of the library building (Building L) on the Clarkston campus (555 North Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston, GA 30021). Visitors may park in Lots 3, 4, or 5. The exhibition is free and open to the public. For more information about this event, please call 678-891-3572.

Callanwolde Concert Band will perform on Sept 18 @ Clarkston

The Callanwolde Concert Band, will perform in the Cole Auditorium located in the Fine Arts Building (F) on the Clarkston campus of Georgia State University, Perimeter College, at 3 p.m.

The Callanwolde Concert Band was formed in 1972 as part of a summer program at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center and has been working as a non-profit corporation since for almost 35 years. Sunday’s concert “... and the beat goes on… ” will pay tribute to the groups former concert director, Raymond Handfield, who recently passed away in June.

Maggie Mitchell to read from “Pretty Is” @ Dunwoody

The Chattahoochee Review Guest Author Series Presents a Reading
by Maggie Mitchell, 2016 Townsend Prize for Fiction Finalist

Author Maggie Mitchell will read from her book, Pretty Is, at the Georgia State University, Perimeter College’s Dunwoody campus on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. in room NB-2100/2101.

This reading is free and open to the public. Faculty members from Perimeter College’s English department are strongly encouraged to bring their classes.  Copies of the novel will be available for sale, and light refreshments will be served. Celebrate 11 Years of the AJC-Decatur Book Festival with The Chattahoochee Review

Enjoy the Labor Day Weekend with The Chattahoochee Review (TCR) at the annual AJC-Decatur Book Festival (AJC-DBF). This year marks the 11th running of the largest independent book festival in the country that features a stellar gathering of world-class authors, illustrators, editors, publishers, and booksellers. The festival kicks off at Emory’s Schwartz Center on Friday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. with its keynote event that pays tribute to the life and works of beloved and bestselling author Pat Conroy, who passed away in March from pancreatic cancer.

As in years past, TCR editors, along with faculty members from Perimeter College at Georgia State University’s English Department, will be participating in the following programs throughout the weekend festival:

One of the most anticipated aspects of the 2016 festival is the program track curated by novelist and Whiting Award-winner, Alexander Chee (The Queen of the Night). The Alexander Chee Selects Track will feature a dream team of authors who, through discussions about their works, will speak to themes related to how history tends to repeat itself.

Choral concert Sept 10 @ Clarkston

On Saturday, September 10, 2016, the Cathay Atlantic Art Ensemble will provide an afternoon of choral music starting at 3 p.m. in the newly renovated Cole Auditorium in the Fine Arts building (F) on the Clarkston campus.

The Cathay Atlantic Art Ensemble (CAAE) has been performing concerts, parties, and conferences across Atlanta and in various Chinese communities in the US since 1999. Those who are interested about hearing this group perform can learn more about the choral group on their website in addition to hearing samples of previous concerts.
