The detention center that we visited today was called ESMA, and this was bigger than the rest at about 17 blocks. The officers used many people for things like slave labor, or doing other jobs to stay alive longer. The torture would vary throughout the process, with things like electric, music, and drugging many before throwing them from airplanes. It was hard to officially hear that the 3 branches of military was responsible for this suppression. The fact that many of the 200 survivors are still going through trial to get some sort of justice. Which just goes to show how recent things were and this is a mindset that might still be around in different forms.

Strejilovich’s Poem
This name isn’t mine! it was a hundred a thousand all of them mine it was body and womb and voice it had neighbors it whistled it was diurnal and nocturnal it was a god.
This passage that came from the poem A single Numberless Death. Reminded me greatly of the tango show that we as a group just attended. They danced with such grace, and seemed to be at peace while doing it. I connected the two things because no one that was dancing seemed to be weighed down by the hardness that comes with living life. Like the poem said the voice is not theres, and listening to the woman sing she sounded as if she was singing to the world rather than the people in the room. Overall the show was something to express gratitude, freedom, and the joy of still being on this world.
Detention center
I was interesting visiting the detention center and getting to see one of many places that held, and diminished people. Still trying to recover many aspects of “Club Athletico” they have ran into many issues that suppress their growth. With things like not having the money or workers to finish persevering this memorial. They spoke about how the main reason for continuing to work on this project was to conduct an archaeological, and documentary type testimony, and I believe this is to make it more personal to people that visit this. Is was also shocking to hear about many of the living conditions that people had to face. Overall a very eye opening place that is full of history. And seeing nunca mas engraved in the ground showed just how fed up many citizen are.
Women’s March
The murdered women had not belonged to a militaristic organization or even a political one; they were barely a dozen unarmed people whose only link was their kinship to others who had disappeared. From the flight confessions of an Argentine Dirty Warrior.
We will be marching with the Mothers of
Plaza de Mayo. This is a way many women show their strength from their last trauma. I noticed a photo of women that wore the white head scarfs. These women are standing up so they wouldn’t be silenced or feel as if their lives have little meaning. The women looked exhausted and were reading about the Punto Final. Which seemed to be a big issue around the 1980’s. This is a very important movement to many people. So I am very excited to be a part of something that is near and dear to many people’s hearts.
Coming to Buenos Aires
First getting to Buenos Aires I noticed a lot more people with darker skin tones, and hair. And more indigenous features than in cordoba. I’ve noticed getting looked at less going through the bus station which was a little nice. But we are also just getting off of the bus so it could get either better or worse throughout this experience.
I had more photos but thought it would be ethical to not show faces.
As Nader (1969) demonstrated with reference to the Zapotec culture, justice need not mean an eye for an eye. Justice can also aim to restore equilibrium by creating a situation where people do not feel they are a threat to others, or threatened by others.
While going through the detention centers and hearing about all of the horrible things that many people with authority did to citizens in Argentina. I was surprised to hear that many families did not seek retaliation or try to harm many of the leaders of this operation. Instead they found justice through jail time and making sure that each of these people’s memories was highlighted as important. So referring to the Zapotec Culture they found equilibrium to be the best way to find justice. Doing things like raising awareness, organizing marches, and making memorials for the lost loved ones. Which seemed to have a better impact overall.
individualistic vs collectivistic
After visiting the home of Laura I saw how important family was to all of them. The hospitality was very nice and they all seemed to be very nice and happy to have us. I enjoyed spending time in an environment that felt light and full or happiness. After seeing Laura’s family it made me realize how individualistic Americans are rather than being more collectivistic. Meaning that Americans worry more about themselves and their own self goals. Rather than worrying about the foundation of the family and making sure their children do not leave home until they are set to. Many people in the group no longer stays with their parents but has started to build a life fr themselves. While many people like Laura’s kids still stay in the home until they either get married or have children. Family time seems to be a strong aspect in Argentina. You can expect longer dinners without cellphones or distractions. Americans can see this and try to spend more time with their families without distractions and outside issues interrupting.
Los caruchines
Yesterday we visted Los carichines which is a place that helps children that do not have all of rescources they need. This place was abandoned and overrun with greenery. After a while of standing strong, and serving meals out front they finally got the keys so they could help a larger number of children. They also help children that are in bad homes, or not getting the love that they need. After talking with Mikayla, and David it was eye opening how things in aregentina was affected by destruction that has happened over the last decade. Overall I believe Americans can take away the use of unity and recognize that sometimes it is better to do for others than only for yourself.
