Annotated Bibliography Workshop

The Basics

  • Should have a summary
  • Include a description: author, what it is about, purpose
  • Have a citation of the source
  • “Google is your friend, EasyBib is not” when it concerns citing
  • MLA Format
  • Relate it to another one of your bibliography entries
  • Annotated bibliography is made up of summaries of your individual sources
  • The conclusion of annotation should be about how it relates to your overall research topic

The Summary

  • Statement of the broad general topic
  • Needs to be concise
  • Needs to have a balance of claims and evidence
  • In terms of a source with research findings, have enough evidence to show what the findings are

Overall

  • When it comes to reliability, we tend to assume that the source is reliable
  • If you don’t say anything, then it is a reliable source
  • Only need to say something if you suspect the source is not reliable
  • Should address reliability if the author’s bias is apparent, or if it is a source like an editorial
  • Can use sources that show bias to show that those viewpoints exist and to address them
  • Make sure to cite everything that wasn’t made by you, for example: pictures, videos, etc.
  • When using multimodal sources (pictures, videos, etc.) for your annotated bibliography, describe the source as you would a written article. The description can be up to your interpretation.
  • Ideas for multimodal sources: maps

Difference Between Tags and Categories

Categories

  • Categories are what exactly the thing
  • So if something is an annotated bibliography, that would be its category

Tags

  • Tags are what it is about
  • So if something is about architectural exclusion, then you would tag it like that
