Composed of enthusiastic young musicians from across DeKalb County, DYS provides musical opportunities beyond the regular curriculum and offers students the chance to learn and perform music from a vast repertoire ranging from Classical to Modern, Opera to Pop, and Musicals to the Movies, recently debuting a new Scottish Symphony.

Peach State Opera – Amazing Opportunity – Feb 26

Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca” is a masterpiece of Italian melodrama and one of the most famous operas in all of Western history. A condensed, family-friendly version in English is being brought to the Clarkston campus! This particular performance features student of the DeKalb School of the Arts choral program.

Professor Coleman is the William and Isabelle Curry Eminent Faculty Scholar Chair in Voice at Columbus State University. He is designated as a Master Teacher by the National Association of Teachers of Singing.  His former students may be heard at the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Covent Garden, La Scala, and in several Broadway musicals.  His students have been nominated for the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Awards.  Kelly Cash, Miss America 1987, studied voice with Professor Coleman.  He is in demand nationally and internationally for master classes and workshops.  Professor Coleman also has served as a judge for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, The Singer of the Year Competition, the National Finals of the MTNA Young Artist Voice and Senior Voice Competitions and the NATS Artist Award Competition.

Dekalb Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Children’s Concert! – Jan 22

Featuring Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf

Narrated by WSB-TV’s Nicole Carr!

Will also feature young dancers from the Decatur School of Ballet. 

This is a family favorite for children of all ages to come and enjoy.  It is a great opportunity for parents and grandparents to introduce their children and grandchildren to live classical, orchestral music.

Also included in the program will be music from Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Arlen’s Over The Rainbow, Holst’s Jupiter, and Sousa’s The Stars And Stripes Forever.

Peter and the Wolf tells the story of Peter and his adventures in the meadow near his home.  Other characters in the story include Peter’s grandfather, a bird, a duck, a cat, a hungry wolf, and hunters.  Each character is represented by their own tune played by certain instruments of the orchestra.  Through the story Peter learns how to cope with life’s challenges and dangers by using courage, creativity, and leadership.  He also discovers in the process the true meaning of caring, friendship, and respect.
