Spring 2014 Fundraising Meeting (Part 1)

As mentioned in our last posting, we are opening up a Google Doc for all those who would like to contribute ideas to the Spring 2014 Fundraising meeting scheduled for this Friday (March 14) at 1:00 p.m. but are unable to attend. You may also post ideas if you are planning on coming to the meeting and would just like to have them written in the document before hand.

To access this document, please follow the link for the Spring 2014 Fundraising Ideas & Planning sheet. This link should bring you to a page that will prompt one of the New Voices staff to add you as a collaborator. You may also e-mail us to request access to this document, and we will be happy to add you as well. Once in the document, please fill out a row by providing your name, a brief explanation of your idea, a proposed date for the event, and any additional notes for consideration. Additionally, feel free to mark the last box in an idea’s row for which you would like to cast a vote. We look forward to discussing all of this input at Friday’s meeting.

Updates from 03.07.2014 New Voices Meeting

At our meeting this last Friday, the New Voices planning committee made several updates to the committee and the calendar that we would like to share.

First, we are happy to announce that the 2014-2015 New Voices planning committee has been assembled! Please see the home page for a listing of the current committee members. Also, if you would like to volunteer with New Voices during this planning year, please let us know via e-mail.

Additionally, we have decided to hold our first fundraising event for this planning year during the Spring 2014 semester. In light of this development, we will be holing a special meeting to discuss possible fundraising ideas. This meeting is not mandatory; however, we encourage anyone who is interested or has an idea regarding this upcoming event or future fundraising activities to join us for this meeting on March 14 at 1:00 p.m. Please see the Meeting Information page for details. For those of you who will be unable to join us, we will also be opening up a Google Doc so that you can add your ideas for consideration. Please check back  here after the meeting for more information including a link to the document.

Lastly, we have updated the New Voices planning committee meetings with the next three meeting dates. These meeting dates were selected based on the meeting availability days and times that you all kindly shared with us via our meeting availability poll. Please see the Meeting Information page for details regarding the next meeting and the Calendar page for a schedule of upcoming meetings.

First Official New Voices Meeting of Fall 2013

To the New Voices blog followers –

Today we had our first official New Voices meeting. We were lucky enough to snag the conference room, which was really cool and nicely air conditioned.

We got some new people interested in being involved and on the committee. But if you couldn’t make it (we only had 3 new people, but we had 30 people interested o the list), please feel free to contact us and let us know of your interest in being involved. We need to replace most of our committee next year and we are excited to show any new people the ropes.

Orientation Day Meeting Notes

So we don’t usually put our meeting minutes up here on the blog. Mostly that has to do with the fact that we have no secretary. New Grad students – wanna volunteer??

It is important to note however, that we are going to have a back to school bake sale at the end of September. We need people to get involved.

Also – our first official meeting of the semester, where YOU are invited to get involved as much or as little as you would like, is coming up.

New Year – New Voices

Everybody Loves Cake

Hey New Voices blog readers!
Our last meeting was a success – we got two new faces wanting to help out. Thanks Zack and Laurie!

A couple of things you might need/want to know:

We are going to have a cake raffle on what is now called Patriot Day – you may all know it as 9/11. It will be held all day on the 9th floor of GCB and we  will be raffling off a red/white/blue patriotic cake. So come buy and see us, purchase a ticket, and support New Voices.

Also, we will be holding the annual bake sale the week before Halloween. It will follow our monsters theme. We will be having it 4 days in a row October 22nd – 25th in the courtyard in front of the library. If you want to bake for us… WE NEED YOU!!

If you want to help, or bake, or anything – please come to our next meeting on Wednesday September 19th @ 4PM in Troy Moore Library.

Next Meeting (Last Summer Meeting)

To all parties interested –
New Voices is having their next planning meeting Friday, July 27, 1:00 p.m., the Commons Room, 9th Floor GCB. If you have never been to the Commons Room, it is at the end of the same hall the department office is on, toward the stairs.

At the next meeting we will be putting together the first advertisement flier, discussing more ‘get the word out’ ideas, and talking about what will happen at the start of the semester.

If you are interested in helping, or just stopping by to meet some people you may not already know, please come by and do so.

Planning Stages

Hey all!

Anne Melfi just sent me the minutes of the last meeting, which she called ‘planning meeting’ and I think is absolutely what it was.

Our primary goal of the meeting was to decide how to spend the remaining budget before the end of the fiscal year, which is at the end of May. We definitely want this to go toward the next conference, so we discussed a few ideas:

– making canvas bags like the ones we had last year, but with next year’s info and art

– getting a bunch of pens that say New Voices so you all have one and can remember that this conference happens every year

– paying for student center rooms (or whatever it is they charge) so we can get more than one panel going at a time

These are all excellent ideas, and we threw around several others, all great ideas.

Here is the bag for last year’s conference:

Mary Grace did a really good job snagging us a great deal. This year, we are going to do something similar, with new art, and of course, the new dates.

A friend of mine is sending us a couple of choices, and Deborah is also asking a friend. If any of you know people (or are people) that would be willing to contribute their vision of the theme “Monsters, Villains & Aberrations,” please send them my way.

We need all art contributions before the 16th of May (that’s a Wednesday).

Speaking of the 16th – that is the date of our next meeting:

May 16th 2012 11:30AM@ Java Monkey in Decatur

We will be making final decisions on the CFP, the art for the bags and other posters, the new new voices logo that Anne Melfi is creating for us, and the location for the actual conference.

Sometime early next week, a few of us will be headed down to the Student Center to see if we can get a few rooms in order to run multiple conference presentations at once. Our hope, again, is to expand the conference a little each year – and hopefully one day get national recognition. Fingers Crossed! We’ll need plenty of faculty support to pull this off, so make sure to mention New Voices often in your classes this summer and next Fall.

So to all who are interested – please join us at our next meeting. We’ll be having lunch together, or just coffee, if you’re not into sandwiches and salads. Feel free to email us @ newvoices11@gmail.com if you need directions or if you have questions.

End of the Year Post

If you’re at all like me, you’re probably worried about the hair you’re losing or the wrinkles that feel like they’re setting in. Or how about those extra paper pounds? You know, the ones you gain while you eat ramen in the wee hours of the morning as you try and squeeze just one more sentence out?

But it’s almost over.

Almost everyone’s papers are due today or tomorrow – Grades are due the 2nd – it’s all coming to a head.

And there is light at the end of the tunnel.


In light of this (pun intended) – we have scheduled the next New Voices meeting. If you attended the last one, you already know about it. But just in case, here is the info:

New Voices Meeting – May 1st, Tuesday – 5PM – Troy Moore Library

Afterward, we will be going to Leon’s for the first annual Ex Post Facto party!
