FYG (Chapter 1)Reading Summary

*Rhetoric is a persuasive language act
-Aristotle defined rhetoric as the faculty of discovering, in a given instance,the available means of persuasion
-the power to see the means of persuasion available at any given situation
1 the power- speak eloquently and most suitable arguments for every situation and persuasion
2 to see-be able to spot persuasive communication

*Columbusing– “discovering” something, usually from another culture, that is not new EX:hummus, henna

*Rhetorical argument– the carefully crafted presentation of a viewpoint or position on a topic and the giving of thoughts, ideas, and opinions along with reason for their support

Types of Argument:
1.makes a point-simply make a point about a topic
2.aims to persuade- writer wants to persuade audience to change stance
3.tries to find common ground-offers multiple ideas and viewpoints and tries to find ground to agree upon

Aristotle’s Three Appeals:
-Ethos-credibility
-Pathos-emotions
-Logos-reasoning and evidence
—> All can be used by skilled rhetors to determine what will be most persuasive to audience
—>Kairos-opportune moment for the argument
(1)time, (2)place, (3)audience, (4)topic
