Emily Bazelon informs the reader that the bathrooms are clearly separated into the men’s bathroom and the women’s bathroom. In “Making Bathrooms More ‘Accommodating’,” Bazelon describes the bathroom as a place where people relieve themselves, and “feel vulnerable.” With the increasing number of openly transgender people, society must consider ways to make everyone including these transgenders to feel equally respected. Although small changes such as calling the person by his or her preferred name, or allowing people to be on whichever gendered sports team they would like, changes in public bathrooms and showers has become an issue due to the dramatic change and money being used to make these changes.
The author also explains that the reason for bathrooms being separated by gender originated from the Victorian Era, in which male urinals were suited for men and females had to go inside a stall to use the bathroom. Overall, Bazelon sends out a message that the issue of whether or not more unisex bathrooms should be built will continue to be an issue unless changes are made for an equal world.
