The Institute on Neuroscience (ION) is a paid summer-long research program, sponsored in the past by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The program seeks high school students who excel in science and have an interest in research. After participating in an introductory neuroscience course, ION Scholars are matched with mentors by interest to conduct a nine-week mentored laboratory research project. Weekly professional development workshops focus on topics such as scientific communication, the ethical conduct of research and special topics in neuroscience. At the conclusion of the program, students present their laboratory research results at the ION Research Symposium to an audience of peers, family, friends, teachers and community members.
The Center for Behavioral Neuroscience at Georgia State University has received funding for Summers 2024 and 2025 from the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) to offer the program for students identified as underserved in STEM. The application window for Summer 2025 is late January through Friday, March 21, 2025.
