Welcome to City Saga, the new way to experience history where it happened. This demonstration prototype is designed to test what will be included in the next version of City Saga.

City Saga shares multiple tours in one place. The newest addition was produced with students at the Georgia State University Honors College, Alonzo F. and Norris B. Herndon Human Rights Initiative Seminars from Spring 2015 and 2016. This portion of the tour connects Decatur Street, the site of Alonzo Herndon’s original barber shop, to Peachtree Street, the location of Herndon’s opulent Crystal Palace baths to Herndon Plaza, the former site of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, which helped quietly fund the Civil Rights Movement from Atlanta.

From there, the tour continues from Herndon Plaza to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, utilizing a collection of stories, images, and audio all in one place, making everything available to choose your own experience. These tours include:

  • The Andrew Young Audio Tour, produced by the Center for Civil and Human Rights;
  • The Sweet Auburn Walking Tour, started by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs during the administration of Atlanta’s first black Mayor Maynard Jackson;
  • Timeline of Sweet Auburn, and The Civil Rights Walking Tour, created by the Atlanta Preservation Center.

These tours are combined with images from the Library of Congress and the Georgia State University Digital Archive, along with other resources.

We welcome you input. Let us know how we can improve. Share your suggestions at citysagainfo@gmail.com.
