Georgia State Honors College Pays Tribute to Herndon Family and Civil Rights Movement Unsung Heroes

 
Atlanta, GA – Students belonging to the Georgia State University Honors College are proud to present their culminating efforts on the research course, “Uncovering Forgotten Legacies of the Civil Rights Movement.” This is the second cohort of Honors students to concentrate on the history of Alonzo Herndon, founder of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. As well, student aimed to highlight the buried legacies of those who also contributed to the Modern Civil Rights Movement, such as Dr. Roslyn Pope, Dr. C.T. Vivian, W.E.B. DuBois, Lonnie King, Jr. and many others.

The program will take place on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at the Georgia State University Honors College located at 100 Auburn Avenue. Guests are welcome to arrive at 11 a.m. to enjoy appetizers and small talk with the Honors students and professors of the course. The event will begin promptly at 12 p.m. in Centennial Hall, and a reception will follow including a question and answer session with the presenters and course advisors.

The Honors College has remarkable diversity among the participating student body. Very few students have previous knowledge of the history of Atlanta and how to successfully conduct historical research, yet they were able to step out of their comfort zones and uncover vital information about the city they call home.
