Discrimination by Architecture

Sarah Schindler goes in a different direction of explaining one of many ways that discrimination is used in the American society. She brings attention to the different structures of buildings and ways of transportation that limits and hinders on the lives of non-white citizens. Schindler provides examples and evidence of man made segregation and creates a new way of thinking of today’s environment. Architecture can be used as a way to leave people out of certain areas and keep them from obtaining any equality.

She starts by explaining how walls and fences are used to separate races which is the recent use of Jim Crow. Separate but equal is two conflicting concepts that is not true together. In the beginning of the piece, Schindler explains how, “Wealthy communities have declined to be served by public transit so as to make it difficult for individuals from poorer areas to access their neighborhoods”(Schindler). The quote reminded me of redlining and how some real estate agents don’t provide the same listing options for certain races or classes. It explains how throughout America, there is usually a predominantly white population in suburban areas. Limiting and separating the way people live is a form of covert racism which Schindler argues is still present in today’s society.

Schindler also mentions the Court system and how it is hard to prove that architecture is used to discriminate a group. She mentions that,  “The most straightforward reason is that it is difficult to show the necessary intent to discriminate, especially in situations involving land use and the built environment”(Schindler). Even though the Court can clearly see some cases of it, it is usually ignored and not talked about. Sara Schindler wrote her article mainly for lawyers and judges so the discussion can be had about the state of segregation in the environment that Americans live in. Her goal is to start the conversation and come up with a realistic solution to bring the racist act used by buildings and transportation and present it in a way where the Court has to take action.
