“The Charter refers directly to the UN human rights tradition as precedent and inspiration, and it proposes a large number of new rights for citizens, such as participation in urban decisions, affordable housing, cultural rights, physical safety, municipal services, and sustainable development.”(pg.143)
-Rights are suppose to give citizens an equal amount of opportunity and resources. It is easy to see that human rights are lacking especially in minority groups or anyone in the working or lower class. With police brutality, racism, sexism, homophobia, and many other crippling things in our society, it shows how human rights are non-existent.
“Rather, as we will see, his socialism insists on the withering away of the state and the collective self-governing of society. Moreover, it is not an already worked-out and ideal society. It is rather an open project, one that moves us in a direction, toward a horizon beyond the present capitalist and state-bureaucratic society, but whose precise outcomes cannot be fully known.”(pg.145)
-A self governed society does seem better than our current capitalist society. But since our current government and justice system has been embedded in the foundation of our society, people will slowly revert back to a capitalist government if another form of government did happen to form. It is not very realistic to believe that we can completely throw away the capitalist system when people have been fighting to get on top all their lives and it is the norm to do whatever it takes to get ahead. It is possible to achieve a form of a non-state ran government with an underlying presence of capitalism.
“He hoped that an analysis of space, and specifically of the “lived spaces” that people actually experience, would be able to apprehend human life as a complex whole and avoid reducing our understanding of experience to small fractions of life, such as class status, gender, race, income, consumer habits, marital status, and so on.” (pg. 145).
-Even if certain ideologies have been embedded in America, there is proof that it can change. Same-sex marriage, minimum wage in some aspects, and the slow closing of the gap between male and female employees’ salary are some forms of evidence. There has been changes even though some ideologies are still apparent. There will always be a struggle to successfully form an equal and non-capitalist government but it is possible.
