Spelman is widely known as one of the most competitive Historically Black Colleges. It consist of mainly female students even though male students are allowed to take courses on the campus. The sounds of the environment and the visual aspects of the campus influenced certain feelings that my friend and I had during our time there.
The first thing we noticed was how quiet and secluded it was from Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College. There weren’t many students out because classes were in session. Most of the noise was from the leaf blower that the gardeners were using or the start up of cars. Next we noticed the landscape and architecture.
The buildings seemed older with brick foundation. Inside the buildings had an upper scale look because of the elegant structure of the wooden walls and furniture. Everything seems clean and there are food franchises on the campus like Starbucks and Subway. There are many girls and very little number of guys. And almost all the girls I saw had some type of Spelman merchandise like a shirt or hat. The last visual thing that is noticeable is all the green nature like grass, trees, and bushes. All the sounds and visual characteristics develop certain feeling to the people who experience the features of Spelman.
Since Spelman is in Atlanta,GA, the first feeling I got was being extremely hot which temporarily irritated me until I finally bought a beverage. But on the campus, I felt like every time I would speak that I was loud because of how quiet it was. The quiet atmosphere did create a calm environment which made me feel comfortable and in a way at peace since I am not really use to silence. Spelman is a nice and quite part of the Atlanta University Center that has a peaceful atmosphere.
