Book Review – Monsters Eat Whiny Children

Today’s book review is the third in a series on “Wild Things”.  You can read the first two here and here.

41hJBLFBapL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_Bruce Eric Kaplan’s latest children’s book is a cautionary tale that Monsters Eat Whiny Children ($14.49, hard cover, Simon & Schuster).  Henry and Eve’s father warns them what might happen if they continue to whine and complain, and before many pages have been turned, they find themselves sitting on a bed of lettuce as part of a whiny-child salad.  The monster wife’s dislike of cilantro and a visit from a neighbor change dinner from salad to whiny-child burgers.

With snarky text that provides many opportunities for using monster voices during a read aloud, readers watch the monsters and their friends debate the best way to prepare whiny children.  By the time the monsters have settled on cucumber sandwiches as the best option, Henry and Eve have escaped and have learned their lesson…mostly.
