Cathy Kaemmerlen, prominent southern storyteller and author, wrote The Historic Oakland Cemetery of Atlanta: Speaking Stones as an in depth overview of the history of Atlanta’s famous Oakland Cemetery. The book describes why and Oakland Cemetery came to be, but also how the cemetery is designed and sectioned off. Generally one might think the book is written for Atlantans, but it is written in such a way that appeals to any historian. The book helps set the stage for understanding a slice of early Atlanta and what history you may find in the cemetery.

Donald Ragsdale, published and distinguished professors of communications, collaborated on Beyond buildings: designed spaces as visual persuasion to analyze the rhetoric of environments. Important to those studying environments such as dérives, one might find this book helpful in critically understanding what a space is communicating. Specific to my research, the different cemeteries are analyzed and although they don’t focus on boundaries created by the way the space is built, it helps you read and interpret the spaces in new ways.
