The DeKalb Youth Symphony Orchestra is made up of more than 70 musicians, aged 13 – 18, from high schools throughout the county. The youth orchestra was started in 1967 to expand the musical horizon of DeKalb County’s young musicians as the string orchestra program developed in DeKalb County, part of metro Atlanta, Georgia, USA. DYS is a symphony orchestra with strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion, with students auditioning for admission. DYS has performed in Washington, D.C., Boston, Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Lucerne, Paris, Budapest, Prague, Tinjian, Beijing, Rome, Florence, Venice, Montreal, Galway, Dublin, Riga, Tallinn, Helsinki and has performed several times at the Georgia Music Educator’s Association conference in Savannah. Earl Kuutti has led the orchestra for the past 33 years. DYS rehearses once every week during the school year at Chamblee High School and performs three regular free concerts (Fall, Winter, and Spring) on Georgia State University’s Clarkston campus. DYS also presents an annual Youth Concert for the elementary string players in DeKalb County, giving them a chance to hear what they can achieve if they practice and continue to grow musically.
