In this article Tick “argues for gender-neutral design as the next frontier in the workplace.” Tick’s main focus is to show how gender and the views on it are changing. As gender changes society must change as well so that both parties are better suited for each other. Up until not gender has always been seen as strictly male or strictly female, but now identity can be defined “by increasingly visible manifestations of sexuality or lack thereof.” Because of the changes occurring Tick believes that designers and societal norms have to change to become accepting of this new idea.
One of the difficulties that Tick mentions in the article is that this world is “male dominated.” One of the things that has started to help get rid of male dominance is Emma Watson’s He for She movement. This movement has helped eliminate some of the superiority of male over female, and made males join the fight for equality. Watson has invited males to be apart of the fight for gender equality.
Since gender is more than just being associated as a male or female, fashion designers have been changing their designs. To appeal to the consumers who are defining their gender identity or are transgender, designers have started to make clothing that is more gender neutral.
The fashion industry is not the only one that is changing, the education system is also changing. Some institutions do not require students to state their gender. “Martine Rothblatt, the trans CEO of United Therapeutics”, has helped open the eyes of the public and show the public the different sexual identities that exist. Due to the transgender movement and the change that people undergo to change their gender some corporations have started to create gender neutral bathrooms. This is to help people that do not clearly identify as male or female, and hold a different gender identity.
While bathrooms are a positive step towards forming a gender accepting society this is much more then that. Tick says that this issue cannot be solved like the the issues in the Disabilities Act, “[we] cannot approach gender issues in the same way, with just regulations and compliance.”
Overall, Tick is trying to show how confined genders are because of society. The views of others sometimes limit the expression of individuals. However, as more individuals are starting to change more and more awareness is starting to be raised. Due to this society will have to change to provide a more welcoming environment for everyone.

Really enjoyed reading your summary — you did a great job breaking down TICK’s argument and highlighting the key points about gendered communication styles. The way you tied the contrasts between “his” and “hers” patterns back to real-life interactions made the article much easier to grasp. It reminded me of some observations I shared on AimGrip about how misunderstandings often happen not because of what’s said, but how it’s interpreted depending on perspective. Your analysis helps make that clearer, and I appreciate the clear examples you included. Keep up the thoughtful work!
Your article not only provided valuable information but also sparked introspection and reflection on my part.
