ENGL 1102: Stories We Tell: Narrative and Representation (Themed Course) Fall 2020
Course Modality: Hybrid /Blended
Course Description
This course is designed to analyze the importance of narrative and storytelling. Students will read theories of narrative and different texts (printed, audio-visual, and virtual) to rhetorically examine the problems surrounding the representation of gender, sexuality, and race. Texts such as Adichie’s Tedtalk (“The Danger of a Single Story” and “We Should All be Feminists”), Beyoncé’s “Flawless”, short stories, and poems will enable the students to understand the concepts of gender and race from multifaceted angles. Reading and analyzing these texts, Students will compose short critical, analytical essays on the readings. It enhances students’ ability to analyze and question misrepresentation in today’s socio-cultural and political contexts.
