1990’s

If there was a year that went against a lot of societal norms along with political and cultural issues that ensued, the 1990’s was just that.  We cannot forget about the political scandals including the past President Bill Clinton who put himself in the hot seat more than once leading to his impeachment.  A lot of the things that happened in this era was highly motivated by previous decades.  The 90’s were responsible for inspiring and creating fashion trends that never died out due to the constant advertising by people of a certain stature.  The strategies that were incorporated into advertising fashion in the 90’s was a repeat of the 70’s, which was an era of floral, peace and music rallies.  A slew of teenage inspired shows came out making societal statements that influenced teenagers to dress differently.

A lot of media platforms used their influence on their audience through television series like ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ whose cast members expressed a diverse fashion sense. These platforms included:

  • Teen magazine
  • The web
  • and news

The examples of different fashion sense express above show a change in the culture and how they advertised the new norm for fashion.  TLC is a clear example of that, they were not your normal girl group who wore “girly” outfits.  They created change in the culture with their odd combinations of colors and outfits which heavily impacted their fanbase.  Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Saved by the Bell is another example of this recurring change in fashion sense that had a powerful effect on their teenage audience.
