Week 6

I have a lot of Japanese-themed inspiration here this week.

The first picture is an example of a resist-dyeing method originating from Japan called shibori.

The next three pictures are all Japanese patterns, called “Kame” (turtle), “Yama” (mountains), and “Karakusa”, which is an arabesque pattern seen in many other cultures historically as well, characterized by intertwining, abstract, plant-like motifs.

The sculptural textile wall hangings were made by Portuguese artist Vanessa Barragão, whose work focuses on textile industry pollution and how it affects coral reef environments.

The last two images are fun quilts I’ve seen recently on Instagram, the second of which features exclusively batik fabrics, which I am a huge fan of myself. Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique of Javanese (Indonesian) origin.

I apologize for the poor resolution of images 2-4: they were already thumbnail size when I saved them.
