Spring Break Destinations!!

Here are some places that my high tech students should visit during Spring Break to get some ideas about your project in Second Life.  These were compiled by Dr. Flowers for the use of WISE students.

Below you will find SLURLS (second life locations).

Have fun!!

HISTORY SITES IN SECOND LIFE

Compiled by Dr. Flowers

The history sites in this batch are particularly relevant for us, since they represent three periods from CHIS 202WS. I’ve attached a separate Word file if you’d like to distribute the list to students.

Apollo 11 Landing Site. This Elon University “construction zone for science and math education projects” offers absolutely no information about the landing site or mission. But the combination of the moon’s surface color and texture; the black, star-studded sky; and the color scheme of the space module make the site itself beautiful and worth seeing for design ideas. Also, it’s an excellent example of how a small space can accommodate a project about a complex subject. Building allowed.

Etopia Eco Village. This sim’s compact parcels, devoted to socially and environmentally sustainable living, offer great models for multimedia projects which can easily be built in a small space. The several ways of getting around and seeing the island’s varied projects include an eco-train (my term) which stops at several stations so you don’t have to stay for the entire ride. Be sure to stop at the Pavilion and try out some of the many dances. Although many of them look alike, the numerous dances suggest a small project on social dance through the ages. While creating dance moves would require lots of scripting, the project could make an excellent team study for either history or sociology, especially with a team which includes a computer science major who is or will be studying scripting. Sandbox available. Continue reading

You must also select three possible pre-Civil War items from the Second Life Museum of the African American Experience, take a snapshot of those three items, save them, and do a bit of research on them before class on Friday.

Guidelines for Turning in your paper:

  1. Papers must be submitted as a Word 2007 attachment in your e-mail. If the papers are not in Word, I will not grade them and you will not receive credit!
  2. Papers must include a written section (including at least two CITED sources), and a google map containing at least ten areas mentioned by Olaudah Equiano.  You do not need to have pathways, but if you do, I will award extra points.
  3. Papers must be in standard MLA style and format.  Please see page 432 in Blakesley’s book for an example of a properly formatted MLA paper.  Do not double-double space between paragraphs, indent the first line of every paragraph .5 inches, use 12 point font in the body of the paper, use in-text citation style, and include a Works Cited page at the end.
  4. Do not forget to include your name, the time you have my class, the name of the class (English 106WS), and the date the paper is due.
  5. If you have any questions about turning in your paper, please Skype me (dryaelkassorla), e-mail me (mkassorla@cau.edu), or send me a Second Life IM (Yael Myrtle).

Information I Sent About Portfolio Assignment

B”H

This is the information I sent out in the e-mail to you about how to set up your portfolio.  Please make sure your portfolio/blogs are set up before you return to classes on December 2.

Dr. K

Establishing your Portfolio
I know that a lot of you started your Thanksgiving Break a bit early . . . So I though I had better let you know what we are working on in class.  I don’t want to get behind, as we have a lot to accomplish before the semester is over, and we have very little time.

All WISE classes require a final portfolio, and the WISE team has been searching for an appropriate place to host those portfolios this semester.  We were unhappy with the Portfolio options on WebCT, so we have decided to have you post your portfolios to WordPress.com.

In order to do this, you should go to <http://www.wordpress.com> and establish a free blog.

After your address is confirmed through your e-mail, and you have established your blog, you want to begin by playing around with the appearance and the privacy level of your blog/portfolio for my class.

Login, using your new blog identity and password.

Go to your “dashboard” (you should see a link for this on the top left-hand side of your blog), and choose “appearance.”

Under “appearance,” choose “themes.”

When the themes come up, you will be shown a random set of 15 themes for your blog.  If you want a greater choice of themes, click on A-Z to see all available themes for your blog.

After you choose a theme, click the “Apply” button the the top right-hand side and then “view blog” from the button on the top center.

Now you are ready to start posting.

Each paper that you wish to include in your portfolio should be a separate blog entry.  In addition, you can add pictures, media, and even videos to your blog.

Please play with the application so that, on Monday, I can answer any questions you may have about using the blog site for your portfolio.

Please see my blog for this class at <http://drkblog.wordpress.com>

I hope this is helpful!

Sincerely,

Dr. K

The Portfolio: Who, What, When, Where, Why . . . and HOW!

WHO?

The portfolio for WISE English for Dr. K needs to be done by everyone in her English Classes.  It is a requirement of the WISE program.

A beautiful view of the CAU campus

WHAT?

The portfolio is a collection of the work that you have done for my class.  It is all in one place, edited, and ready for me to take a good look and decide upon your final grade.

WHEN?

This is the final assignment for WISE this semester, so you had better get it in for your final.

WHERE?

We are publishing these portfolios as blogs by using WordPress.com’s Free Blogging Site.

WHY?

You need to take a look at what you have done this semester in order to finish your final paper.

HOW?

Please do this with care, with finesse, with creativity, and with some cleverness.  Attempt to impress me.  It will be worth it!
