WordPress Portfolio for 311

What should be in your Blog?

We will be creating a blog using WordPress. The Blog should serve as a place to collect and display your work from this class and others (i.e. it is a portfolio!)  If you don’t know how to get started, please see Dr. K’s “How to Get your Own Blog.”

You can add whatever you want to this blog, but I have underlined some items that MUST BE included so that I know that you know how to do them.  Underlined items are required.  Everything else is just icing on the cake!

Home Page:

Please feel to post any blog entries that you wish, but make sure you include a “sticky post” at the top of your blog that that briefly welcomes a newcomer to your website and explains its purpose.  (Dr. K will teach you how to do a sticky post!  J)

For regular blog entries, please remember that you can post more than text here—try posting video, pictures, and hyperlinking to other sites as you wish.  This makes your blog more interesting to read and can provide an additional way in which to share your work.

Pages

Your blog should contain the following pages (tabs) and subpages (“child” pages/tabs):

  1. About:  Say something about yourself you are and what your major and/or career choice is currently.  You should also post a somewhat professional picture.
    1. Resume:  Make this a “child” of “About” page. Because this resume is posted on the internet, please remove your phone number and address.  Post your e-mail address instead.  Also, your resume will not always post the same as you have it on a word processing program.  In order to allow an employer to download your resume in the correct format, please provide a downloadable PDF of your resume as well.
    2. Writing:  Please post hyperlinks to your subpages on this page.
      1. Descriptive Essay:  Make this a “child” of your “writing” page.  Please feel free to play around with fonts, and insert hyperlinks, photos, or videos.
      2. Elethia Essay:  Make this a “child” of your “writing” page.  Make this a “child” of your “writing” page.  Please feel free to play around with fonts, and insert hyperlinks, photos, or videos.
      3. Research Paper:  Make this a “child” of your “writing page. Make this a “child” of your “writing” page.  Please feel free to play around with fonts, and insert hyperlinks, photos, or videos.

Widgets:

  1. 1.      Search:  Allow users to search your blog.
  2. 2.      Subscribe:  Enable people to subscribe to your blog.
  3. 3.      Twitter:  Allow users to follow you on twitter and show the last five tweets from your professional account.
  4. 4.      RSS Feed:  Choose some feed that you are interested in and that supports your goals. Include the RSS feed in a widget on the side of your blog.  This will insure that there is always new information on your blog, even if you fail to update it.
  5. MetaThis is already there.  It includes signing on to your blog.  You should leave this on the page.
