Creating a Second Life Avatar

B”H

If you haven’t created your Second Life Avatar yet, please do.  This is how you do it:

You Need An Avatar

by Dr. Sandra Hollin Flowers
You cannot enter or function in Second Life without an avatar (definition: an online representation of yourself). To get an avatar, you have to first open an account by “joining” Second Life at http://secondlife.com/. There’s no charge to join or create an account. All you need is a valid e-mail address.

If you’d like to see the process for joining and getting an avatar before starting, take a look at the “How to Live in Second Life” video below.

Choosing a Name and a Look

Choose your avatar’s name carefully, since you won’t be able to change the name later because your account is tied to the name. But you can change the appearance of your avatar–even changing gender or becoming an animal or a machine–so don’t be overly concerned at this point about how you look.

Note that to do any of the above, you must be using a computer that has the Second Life “viewer” installed or you must be able to install the viewer on the computer you’re using. At present, the WISE lab (lower level of Kresge Hall) is the only location on campus where the viewer is installed.
