On Sunday February 7th, 2016, which happened to be Super Bowl Sunday, I took a long walk around Piedmont Park. If you are not familiar with Piedmont Park, it is the biggest park in Atlanta and is supposed to be comparable to Central Park in New York. The official address is located at 1342 Worchester Dr NE, Atlanta, GA 30306 but there are several entrances. I parked in the gravel lot on 10th Street. The first thing I noticed when I entered the park was just how cold it was. The wind seemed to be much more apparent here as opposed to elsewhere in the city. The trees that were once green in the summer are now bare and all the colorful leaves that inhabited the ground have been compounded into the soil. From the entrance on 10th street there is a field to the left and one to the right. The field to the left is characterized by the many hills it contains while the field on the right is more of a valley. This particular day the field on the right was surrounded with orange fencing and covered with huge pipelines, bulldozers, and other construction materials.
I proceeded towards the recreational area of the park which has the pool, playgrounds, soccer fields, etc. Just before the connecting bridge there was a young guy playing guitar and collecting money around a modest crowd. The crowd was blocking the bridge to some extent so the musician was in a way acting like a bridge troll from a fairy tale. Under the bridge there is a pond that serves as a home to a flock of geese. There were several people that brought bread from home to feed the animals. The geese fought over the bread and did so in a particularly loud fashion. A good view of the pool can be seen from the bridge. The pool is filled with water and has the fountains running year round eventhough it has been closed for some time now.
The recreational are was much more populated than the previous area. The playground jumped out to me because there were so many kids playing. This was surprising partly because it was cold and windy but also because living in a big city near a college campus made it very rare for me to see kids in a group this large. I took a video of the playground, which I am sure looked a little suspicious, to add to my artifacts and moved on.
- Since it was Super Bowl Sunday, I was repping my Denver Broncos shirt and beanie. While I was walking through the soccer and baseball fields I was stopped by a group of people that were also fans. I talked with them for about 10 minutes and ended up getting invited to their super bowl party. The people in the park are much more friendly than in other parts of the city. I informed them that I had already had plans and we went our separate ways. The sun was going down so I made one last stop at the basketball and tennis courts. The tennis courts were filled with people of multiple skill levels. There was a big lesson going on which interested me because there was one guy yelling really loud and tennis balls all over the court and against the fence. It was getting late and I really did have my own super bowl to get back to so I went back to where my car was parked and left.
