In Tapestry of Space by Margaret Morton; photographs of New York’s homeless demonstrate how urban space impacts and directs behavior. Margaret Morton captures the setting of communities using other people’s scrap materials. Homelessness is not necessarily not having a place to live, because homeless people do indeed have homes. Margaret Morton captures lives of the homeless and shows how homelessness is a big problem in many cities all over the country.

Most human relationships are made through things that people believe are required to have. People can no longer experience the true meaning of reality because of all of these desired things. Morton believes that nothing is really a need for humans, and that we can live without all of the materialistic things we say are “necessities”. Tourists and many other visitors of any type of city will follow maps, gps’, and many other navigational items that will lead them to big theater’s, resteraunts, shopping centers, and museums. The map however will not lead tourists to tunnels where many homeless people live everyday, and makes population almost completely uninvolved with homeless people. Morton believes that tourists are looking for an enjoyable adventure, but has nothing invested in the impact the city has on identity.

Morton believes that the homeless technically have homes that they built with their own hands. The fact that bulldozers can arrive and destroy all of the homes of the homeless is just unfair and cruel to those who do not have much. Homeless people must gather all of their belongings and scurry to temporary homes such as shelter in doorways, abandoned cars, or with friends. For the rich the materials that were broken and discarded by bulldozers that seemed worthless to us were actually the main building blocks to homeless shelter. Destroying the homes of the homeless was similar to taking out garbage, and the superior did not realize how significant some of these homes were for peoples lives.

The h0meless struggle is far more complex than any of us can wrap our minds around. Those who are not homeless do not associate themselves or even consider themselves on the same level as those who are homeless. This creates difficulty in finding jobs, respect, or even holding out a simple conversation with somebody because of how looked down apon the homeless are in todays society. The Homeless might be dirty, shabby, and unfed but if you look carefully you can see that homeless people are creative and have built a place from scrap to a nice comfortable home. It comes to make you realize that its not aloways about the money and the realistic things, but its just about life and doing things that make you comfortable.

Homeless in New York

In conclusion, Morton’s paper has my thoughts revolving around how the system is corrupt and they need to find a way to stop further abusing homeless people and their rights. At the same time i disagree with Morton because she makes the homeless seem like they have done nothing wrong. Many homeless people do things to waste money that was given to them by their superiors. Homeless people have abused drugs on many different occasions causing them to never get out of their situation that keeps them living as worthless human beings that do not bring anything to the table when it comes to developing society. Morton seems to be too kindly hearted and needs to see that space cannot just be given without cost, and that is why homeless people cannot live in a single spot for long periods of time without paying.
