Brainstorming

For my built environment analysis, I want to focus writing about tourist attractions and fun places to visit in Atlanta. Places such as Phillips arena are places my parents have taken me to visit my whole life. Watching teams such as the Hawks, Thrashers, and the Braves have taught me a lot about Atlanta and makes me want to explain all the places and things people can do to have fun in the city

The Article “Better online living through content moderation” by Melissa King, is an article about targeting online bullying and responses to those who have been affected by a cyber attack.

King starts her article by talking about peer pressure. Nowadays people are being peer-pressured out of the use of social moderation tool because they make you look “weak” or “sensitive”. However, content control will limit the amount of attacks you will get from online agressors. With the use of content control people will stop suffering from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). People believe that those affected by cyber attacks  over exaggerate how bad it is, and that they should try being less sensitive.

Arguments state that most online threats are not even real threats. Cyber attacks are usually just mean threats said on the internet with no real threat to the individuals safety. Caleb Lack a liscenced clinical psychologist, states that; Bullying can be very dangerous to one’s brain if it is prolonged. Caleb Lack also believes that PTSD can be attained from even something as everyday as twitter.

King believes that attacking somebody online, or trying to silence them is a crime and believes it should be stopped immediately. King states that women are also very subject to these attacks especially when the topic is something that is predominately a male activity. Even videogame experts Zoe Quinn (video game developer, and co-founder of Crash Override) and Anita Sarkeesian (creator of the youtube channel “Feminist Frequency,” and the video series “Tropes vs Women in Video Games”) were not able to freely speak their mind without being attacked.

At the end of the article King explains why sometimes “trolling abuse” or “online attacks” can never be completely avoidable. King believes that content control tools are sufficient in letting individuals manage their mental state, and also help dodge online abuse.

The article “color walking” by Phia Bennin and Brendan McMullan is about challenging yourself to look at life in a different perspective. William Burroughs had the idea to inspire his students by taking color walks. Students would walk out and focus on a color that stands out to you. While doing this students would be looking meticulously at colors that stand out. For example, students would for one second be looking at the redness of a bike and then switch their attention to focusing on something else, such as the color of someones skin. Doing this will allow people to notice the unique colors of life instead of their mundane sights. The goal of this is to remember what you saw and pay exclusive attention to the colors you saw that day. download

I personally attempted to do this experiment outside my apartment one evening. I walked through the streets of downtown Atlanta one night, and to my surprise, I was noticing distinctive colors such as the royal blue Georgia State welcome sign. What was most interesting was the colors of the ferris wheel at night. I saw green, purple, blue, and just a ridiculous array of different colors that caught my eyes. After a night of wandering I still noticed the colors of the different things popping up in my head for the rest of the night.

William Burroghs goal was to look at life in a new complex way that could enhance your attention span and notice the beautiful life that we take for granted every single day.

Hunger in Haiti is so bad that mothers wait to name their newborns because so many infants die from malnourishment. Parents must choose which children they want to keep and which ones must go due to the lack of food. A recent study showed that 1 baby dies every 6 seconds. As the innocent die, more people ask the question of: why are so many people dying of food? And can we eradicate hunger?
Many organizations, charities, and funds have been searching for an answer to this problem. However a researcher by the name of dr. Wolff believes she can make a super condensed energy peanut butter, that can help the innocent children in Haiti survive at least through their childhood. Dr. Wolff is asking for funding from big agencies, but many are not willing to sacrifice millions of dollars for the invention of this super butter.

“Solving Homelessness Is Easy. So Why Don’t We Just Do It?” Solving Homelessness Is Easy. So Why Don’t We Just Do It? N.p., 03 Sept. 2015. Web. 04 Mar. 2016.

Homeless people sleep everywhere. Why can’t Americans seem to fix the problem of homeless people? The reason for this is mostly because being homeless is a transitory period. Homeless people are usually homeless for a couple months before they find a stable home. States say that having homeless shelters can cost up to 20,000 dollars per year for each homeless person. With the thousands of homeless people in each state of the United States, we would not be able to afford this.

People ask why States can’t build more homeless shelters. States say that having homeless shelters can cost up to 20,000 dollars per year for each homeless person. With the thousands of homeless people in each state of the United States, we would not be able to afford this, because it is simply too expensive. Also, Tax payers do not want to spend cash to those who are not working for their money. People with jobs will revolt if their tax dollars will go to those who do not work.

Leal, Daniel, Marc Galanter, Helen Dermatis, and Laurence Westreich. “Correlates of Protracted Homelessness in a Sample of Dually Diagnosed Psychiatric Inpatients.” Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment 16.2 (1999): 143-47. Substance Abuse and Homelessness. National Coalition for the Homeless, July 2009. Web. Mar. 2016.

People usually place hard stereotypes against homeless people and claim that they are all substance abusers. As a matter of fact, a large percentage of homeless people do abuse substances. Studies show that substance abuse is much more common in homeless people than it is with housed people. 38% of the people that were homeless depended on alcohol and 26% abused other drugs. In housed people, however, Only 15% were reported doing drugs.

An addictive disorder is often the biggest cause of homelessness. Homeless people get so attached to drugs and alcohol that they lose their jobs, ruin relationships with friends and family members, and end up even losing their housing. Addiction makes the brain tell the body that substance is NEEDED to function. This is why it is so hard for those who want to quit because their brain is constantly demanding substances.
