In this article “Making Bathrooms more Accommodating ” by Emile Bazelon, the author is emphasizing the obliviousness of gender discrimination among society and how the society as a whole contributes. To achieve a better understanding when reading this passage, the term “gender” could be classified into two categories 1.) Biological Perspective- analyzed from a biologic and physiological view. 2.) Social Perspective- a society based way of differentiating behavior, roles, and expectations along with other social activities. In this passage the Author, Emile Bazelon analyzed the different aspects of sex and gender and describes how gender is more prone to having hatred acts against it.

Emile Bazelon intends to promote the prohibition of transgender discrimination among signs and designs world wide significantly the restrooms. This article  “Making Restrooms more Accommodating” by Emile Bazelon creates a feeling of sympathy for transgenders by revealing the prejudice acts embedded in society today.  Emily Bazelon advocates and acknowledge the concerns of transgender, equal rights, and equal privileges, and  while simultaneously diagnosing the problem and effects that will impose on society today.

The term “Accommodates” in this article is a very general term that implies as the will to do something even if you disagreed to it. Imagine if there were one bathroom also called  a unisex restroom and you had to “Accommodate” for everyone else who had to use it regardless of their gender, could you? I would agree with the author that most people would not want to mix anatomical parts when it comes to private places like bathrooms. The author concluded that voters in Houston Texas had rejected the “Bathroom Ordinance” or the broad equal rights ordinance as we would call which prohibited all discriminatory and prejudice acts in towards mix gender people of the Texas Ordinance. This allowed change which was beneficial for transgenders because it gave them the comfort of feeling free.

Most schools nationwide have complied with this law to some extent solely on the behalf public and not private places. Schools started granting the wishes of those with mixed genders by allowing them to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, gender biased clubs, and even giving them right to be called whatever he or she pleases. Schools accommodated with most of the transgenders wishes except when an Illinois School denied a transgender female access into the females locker room. This sparked conflicts worldwide resulting in the allowance of transgenders to use whatever restroom that reasonably fits there gender description along with privacy accessories such as bathroom stalls, curtains, and shower cubicles that could also be used by any other individual that doesn’t feel vulnerable.

The message that Emile Bazelon is trying to convey is “Accommodation” is key to relieving discriminatory and prejudice acts when facing societal  norms or differences in your economy. Accommodation is a strategical concept that allows a chance for everyone by any means.  Accommodation is used in everyday life without people even noticing what they are actually doing. When you sit in the classroom, when you go to a club, or stand in a line your are accommodating by allowing space for the next person behind you so transgenders are not the only ones who have to Accommodate. “The framework of accommodation is useful, as a starting place, because it’s practical.”(Balezon)
