Intro to College-Level Writing Assignments

I take a rhetorical and literary approach towards teaching college-level writing. Throughout the semester, my students learn the principles of thesis-based writing. I also use the principles of rhetorical analysis to further develop the student’s critical thinking skills. I prefer to use literature from writers of marginalized communities. Below is a list of some of the works I’ve used as required reading in my composition courses.

Selections from The Origin of Others, The Source of Self Regard, & Playing in the Dark by Toni Morrison
Selections from Drinking Coffee Elsewhere by ZZ Packer
Selections from The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King
“Mericans” by Sandra Cisneros
Citizen by Claudia Rankine
Solar Storms by Linda Hogan
Gender Trouble by Judith Butler
When my Brother was an Aztec by Natalie Diaz
Postcolonial Love Poem by Natalie Diaz
The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline
Sharks in the River by Ada Limon
Don’t Call Us Dead by Danez Smith
Daytripper by Fabio Moon & Gabriel Ba
