This was my first assignment for my studio class, a self portrait collage. We were supposed to use different materials in order to create an image. We could use magazines, paper, or even kitchen materials. I mostly used magazine paper, and cardboard from a cereal box. I glued all of these onto a 9×12 in piece of paper.
It was a tough process deciding how to render my face, but I am satisfied with how it came out. I used the cardboard shapes as the shadows, and allowed the paper to be the highlights. This created a lot of contrast, but I like the depth it creates as well. For my shirt I used various blue and purple pieces of paper, and I had the background match my shirt by being orange; a complementary color of blue. The hair was probably the most fun part. I tried to use the words on the black to show value getting lighter.
