Blast From the Past: Disney+

By: Gabbi Jones

Have you ever wanted to revisit your childhood? Do you miss all of the old Disney shows that are off the air? In November 2019, Disney+ was debuted. Disney+ has over five hundred movies from Disney’s collection, including recent movies like Captain Marvel and more than seven thousand episodes of old Disney television shows like Hannah Montana. During these difficult times, Disney+ is here to take us back to the simpler times of our childhood. Nowadays, students are stressed with school and the Coronavirus pandemic. Disney was a staple for many millennial’s childhoods, and for almost all of Disney’s assets to be available on one streaming service is a dream come true for them. The best part is, it’s super cheap. You can relive your memories for only $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. Imagine you’re sitting in front of the screen with childlike eyes, eating your favorite snack, and seeing Cinderella’s castle pop onto the screen.

Disney+ is a streaming site to watch all your favorite Disney shows from ones that were on Disney Channel to the classic Disney movies we all know and love. Disney+ stores Disney Channel, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, 20th Century Fox, and National Geographic. Remember Wizards of Waverly Place, That’s So Raven, Kim Possible, and Suite Life of Zack and Cody? They are all exclusively on Disney+. Fans can get access to all of their favorite movies and TV shows, as well new versions and spinoffs of them. You can’t find old Disney shows or most Disney movies anywhere anymore due their licensing contract. Chief financial officer Christine McCarthy said the contract is, “where you can see the foregone licensing revenue begin.” The contract allows them to remove their content from other streaming services like Netflix, giving Disney exclusive rights and more monetary gain.

As I watched a few episodes of Jonas, I remembered how I was rooting for Macy and Nick because they were too cute together. Then, I saw Kim Possible and couldn’t control my excitement because it was my favorite show growing up. Disney+ also has more series that are exclusively on this service. For example, the Lizzie McGuire reprise is only on Disney+. There are so many shows and movies I never thought I’d see again. I have watched all the Disney ‘90s cartoons like DuckTales, Chip and Dale, and Goof Troop. I was reminded of how much better cartoons were back then. The stories were better, the acting was better, and the intro songs were epic.

It functions like any other streaming service such as Netflix or Hulu. You can stream on four devices at once with up to seven profiles. CEO Bob Iger states Disney+ will be, “a treasure trove of long-lasting, valuable content” that “no other content or technology company can rival.” With this service, you can share your account with friends and family to live in a blast from the past.

Disney+ costs only $6.99 per month to relive simpler times and is a good asset to our daily lives and the way we watch TV by costs, viewing time, and the amount of content. Disney+ has two emotions. It can bring you to tears because you can see your childhood flash before your eyes and brings you to tears because you realize how old you really are.
