  1. Thoughts on july 2 at camp grande. In front of the stage is a canopy, under it 2 avenging angels riding on festive carts. I’m told they represent the indegeneous and black forces who first repelled the European control in Bahia. They are marvelous, a woman who could clearly take care of the situation, the other, less imposing, is male. They are angry, dark skinned, exude force. They seem , to me, to provide evidence that the culture here encourages expression of African roots. How can I say this politically correct? There are no angry avenging black women featured in American celebrations. It is good to see people taking their photo with these characters. Identifying with them. In the US we have images of MLK, looking peaceful, or speaking…not rough riding. Or Sojourner Truth, looking like a sedate grandmother.
We look at cleansed and calmed icons of African Americans. The power if the African is concealed. Here, I see it featured and celebrated.
