English 3120 Projects

This course consists of several major assignments, each of which must be completed satisfactorily in order to get a passing grade for the course, although completing all the assignments is not a guarantee for passing the course. In addition, you have weekly assignments that also constitute part of your final grade. Here is a brief description of each of the major assignments and its components.

Please be advised that, due to the online nature of this class, no late assignments are accepted.

Reading Responses (30%)
You’ll read the chapters in Web Style Guide, summary each chapter, and respond to one of the issues or design principles that interests you.

Your reading responses start in week 1. Here’s a list of the chapters you’ll read and respond to:

  • Week 2: Chapter 2 Universal Usability
  • Week 3: Chapter 3 Information Architecture
  • Week 4: Chapter 4 Interface Design
  • Week 5: Chapter 5 Site Structure
  • Week 6: Chapter 6 Page Structure
  • Week 7: Chapter 7 Page Design
  • Week 8: Chapter 8 Typography
  • Week 9: Chapter 9 Editorial Style
  • Week 10: Chapter 10 Forms and Applications
  • Week 11: Chapter 11 Graphics
  • Week 12: Chapter 12 Multimedia

Tagline Analysis (10%)
For this assignment, you’ll analyze the effectiveness of tagline design for three different websites.

Focal Point Analysis (10%)
This assignment requires you to analyze the focal point of three website homepages.

Website Analysis (10%)
For this assignment, you’ll analyze the effectiveness of the overall design of one website.

Final Project–Online Portfolio (40%)
For this final project, you’ll create an online portfolio that can be potentially used for your future job search. It is different from a personal web site. Instead, it’s a professional online space that will market you to potential employers. Your portfolio could include, but is not limited to, the following components:

Although we’ve been working with html and css, for the final project, however, you’re free to choose whatever programming language and software you wish to use.
