English 4320 Project
Overview
As one of the requirements for your graduation, you must create a portfolio either directly in iCollege or upload your url into iCollege if your portfolio is hosted on another platform.
Helpful Resources
Here’s a list of the resources you might find helpful for this project:
- General information on the portfolio: http://sites.gsu.edu/rhetcomp/undergraduate-students/e-folios/
- Sites@GSU: http://sites.gsu.edu
Each of these resources is explained in my instructions below.
Purposes
Your portfolio serves two major purposes: assessment and job search.
Assessment
To satisfy the graduation requirements, your work, as represented by the portfolio, must pass the assessment by the Rhetoric and Composition Program. For general information on the portfolio, visit http://sites.gsu.edu/rhetcomp/undergraduate-students/e-folios/. Your portfolio is assessed in three aspects:
- Knowledge–Whether your work demonstrates adequate knowledge of rhetorical principles.
- Genres–Whether you have a rather wide range of different genres represented in your portfolio.
- Critical Thinking–Whether your works reflect a good level of critical thinking.
Job Search
When you create your portfolio, keep in mind that this could be used in your job search. While the format of the Chalk and Wire system does not lend to the a good level of flexibility in design, for those of you creating the portfolio on a different platform, such as sites.gsu.edu, you have much more flexibility and freedom in terms of how you want to design the portfolio. Also keep in mind that the design of the portfolio itself will reflect on your mastery of the rhetorical principles and will be a subject of evaluation by your potential employers.
Platforms
There’re two platforms you can use.
1. iCollege
Please be aware that GSU has moved the e-portfolio platform from Chalk and Wire to iCollege. For those of you who have no experience with web design, especially with html and CSS, iCollege provides an easy option where you don’t have to worry about design. The downside is that there’s very little flexibility to the format.
2. Sites@GSU
For those of you who would like to take the design into their own hands, an option will be sites.gsu.edu. As students, you automatically get some free web space on the system. This platform uses WordPress, where you can design either in the WYSIWYG mode or in the hard code mode. If you do decide to design your portfolio on this platform, then you’ll upload your url into Chalk and Wire when you’re done.
3. Other Platforms
Some of you might already have a portfolio hosted on a commercial platform. If you do, feel free to use that and upload the url into iCollege.
Required Components
Your portfolio must contain the following:
- Author’s biography
- A minimum of 8 pieces of writing or artifacts
- An introduction for each artifact
- A critical reflection
For more detailed information, please read Portfolio Instructions in Rhetoric and Composition.
What to Turn in
Technically, nothing. Just email me once you’re done with your portfolio.
