The Video Interview Project

Learning to conduct interviews (creating good questions and finding suitable subjects) is a great way to get students thinking about  different perspectives and developing skills in asking open-ended questions to your subject. You may already have an assignment or are thinking about an assignment such as the mini-documentary that you can incorporate an interview as an element of the assignment. Adding video interviews, or making it it’s own project, will encourage students to learn technical skills and more advanced research skills that the can take with them beyond the course.

From doing interviews using audio/video equipment students can:

  • Work on the ability to form constructive questions.
  • Select interview subjects that fit the purpose of the production or research.
  • Conduct primary source research.
  • Learn basic video production techniques and computer skills.
  • Take the interview, edit it, and mix it with other footage to create a story or thesis statement.

Students have easy access to:

  • Simple to use video equipment from the Catlab.
  • iMovie: A video editing software for Mac available on Catlab computers.

On the iPad:

If you are thinking about checking out iPads for your class from CETLOE this is a project that can be done using the iPad. Featuring a camera, mic, and access to Garageband; students can create projects at their ease and fully  on their own time.
