The Public Service Announcement Project

Creating public service announcements is a great way for students to work with persuasive language. This is also an assignment that works well as part of a larger, semester long social issues awareness project. Public Service Announcements can be done as either a video project or a graphics project creating either a commercial or a print ad; or both.

From doing a public service announcement project, students can:

  • Display research skills and social awareness of an issue by using statistics and creditable call to action sources.
  • For video projects, learn basic video and editing techniques.
  • For graphic projects, learn basic design principles.
  • Exercise skills in persuasive writing and building a call to action.

Students have access to:

  • Simple to use video equipment from the Catlab.
  • iMovie: A video editing software for Mac available on Catlab computers.
  • Media research resources to help students find creative commons video, audio, and images to use in their projects.
  • Design software such as Photoshop CC on Catlab computers.

Some students may be better equipped than others to work on their projects at home using their own software. Do know that the Catlab can only support software available on the machines located in their labs and that students should be ready to use other resources such as LinkedIn Learning.

On the iPad:

If you are thinking about checking out iPads for your class from CETLOE, a video version of this project that can be done using the iPad. Featuring a camera, mic, and access to iMovie; students can create projects with a greater deal of flexibility.
