Alpha Upsilon Alpha is an honor society established in 1985 by the International Literacy Association (formerly International Reading Association). The honor society was created to recognize and encourage scholarship, leadership, and service in the field of literacy and language arts at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Greek letters chosen for Alpha Upsilon Alpha come from the words Anagnosis (reading), Upotrophia (scholarship), and Archon (leadership). The motto of the honor society is “Lege sapere aude” – Read, dare to be wise.
The Alpha Gamma Chapter of AUA at Georgia State University is sponsored by The International Literacy Association, and its goal is to recognize scholarship and stimulate interest in the field of literacy. Members of the honor society are leaders in the field committed to promoting literacy for individuals, schools, and society.
