The WAY STUDENTS ARE AFFECTED THROUGH THE BUILT-ENVIRONMENT OF STUDENT HOUSING
“College Residence and Academic Performance: Who Benefits From Living on Campus?” College Residence and Academic Performance: Who Benefits From Living on Campus? Web. 05 Feb. 2016. >.

  • The Source above is an article on the effects of living on campus for college freshman. It’s an unbiased view and provides details on someone’s GPA, their persistence, their change they go through and it also gets compared to living off campus with family. It’s mostly an unbiased viewpoint and contains many details about research and studies that have been taken on this matter. What’s different is that it takes into account the different factors that other studies haven’t such as what type of college it is, the ethnic background of the majority population, and lastly; it takes into account the different types of students that come to the college. This article relates to how a built environment impacts the people that occupy it. I found the articled on Google Scholarly, so it has credibility. The Source however does not take a stand on the subject, it mostly just gives information on the studies that were taken

Lau, Esther Yuet Ying, Chronobiology International: The Journal of Biological & Medical Rhythm Research. Aug2013, Vol. 30 Issue 7, p910-918. 9p. 3 Charts, 6 Graph

  • Lau, Esther Yuet Ying details in the above article the personal affects that housing has on the students. It examines the moods, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, chronotype, and physical and psychological quality of life. This source examines how the built environment effects the morning type campus residents and that they experience more deteriorating wellbeing more than afternoon type campus residents. Choosing this source was relevant and credible because It answers the question of “what’s the effects of campus housing,” and because it came from the library reserves. I chose this source because it gave more knowledge on my topic and it came from a different country; so it provided facts on another environment other than Atlanta. Broadening the backgrounds of the people surveyed and studies increases the diversity and decreases the biasness. The source seems to be really great although it does have a few instances where it details information that isn’t really that relevant to my subject. This source relates to the above source many ways because they both show the impacts of student housing on the minds of college freshman and the impacts they have.

Robinson, M. B., and Roh, S. (2001). Crime on campus: A survey of space users, Crime Prevention and Community Safety: An International Journal 3(4): 33‑ 46. Original published and copyrighted version by Palgrave Macmillan (ISSN: 1743-4629). DOI:10.1057/palgrave.cpcs.8140104

  • Robinson examines in his article the relationship to crime and university housing. He gives lots of details on the crimes that are usually committed around certain universities and shows the effects it has on the students. The article also shows how the impacts of the university and crime rate can change student’s perception of college. I chose this source because it seemed very credible coming from the library reserves and it related to the topic of how an environment is built impacts people. The flaws that I see in the topic is that is states the crimes rates but it doesn’t consider all campuses. Here at GSU we have multiple robberies and in the source it states how robberies are the least focused crime and how drugs and alcohol abuse it the most; however, here we have taken extensive precautions for our library robberies and not much has been done about the alcohol and drug abuse. This article relates to my there sources because they all show the effects of what a built campus has on the students that populate it. It also shows what effects it has on the minds and grades of the students and whether or not the changes that students will go through is worth staying on campus.

Nurul ‘Ulyani Mohd Najib. “Living in On-campus Student Housing: Students’ Behavioural Intentions and Students’ Personal Attainments ☆.” Living in On-campus Student Housing: Students’ Behavioural Intentions and Students’ Personal Attainments. Web. 24 Feb. 2016.

  • The above source is an article by  Nurul ‘Ulyani Mohd Najib called  “Living in On-campus Student Housing: Students’ Behavioral Intentions and Students’ Personal Attainments,” where the primary focus is detailing students actions and Behavioral intentions based on their own attainments. The Study is taken In  Malaysia where many different students are local to that area and many different diverse students that come from other places to study. The article shows two main ideas; which is how students will perform on a college campus in regards to how many benefits they get from the campus, and how the effect of one’s environment and the benefits it gives to someone, can impact how they act towards their environment in the future. I chose this article because it has newly found information and statistics that have been recently published within the last five years about my overall topic on how the student is affected by living on campus. I haven’t found any major flaws related to the source other than that the studies were taken and the information gathered were nowhere near the city of Atlanta; however, this is beneficial because it broadens my knowledge that I will have needed to come together to support my topic.

Valliant, Paul M. “PERSONALITY, LIVING ARRANGEMENTS, AND ALCOHOL USE BY FIRST YEAR UNIVERSITY.” “Social Behavior & Personality: An International Journal” 06 Jan. 1997. Web.

  • Paul M. Valliant’s scholarly article “PERSONALITY, LIVING ARRANGEMENTS, AND ALCOHOL USE BY FIRST YEAR UNIVERSITY,” is an article published to compare and detail students living on campus,  students living with their parents, and students living off campus without their parents. The article gives many facts and statistics that shows how someone living off campus with their parents are way less likely to drink and become alcoholics than someone living on campus. This source helps me with my topic in many ways because it gives information on not only the effects of becoming an alcoholic but also gives the effects of campus living on someone’s self-esteem. This source in relation to my topic helps bring more conversation to the topic of the effects of living on campus to a student. Although the research in the article wasn’t in Atlanta, the information presented in the article is factual and helpful because it is a scholarly source and gives a vast amount of details and statistics I need for my topic.

Muhammad Hilmi Muslim. “Satisfaction of Students’ Living Environment between On-Campus and Off-Campus Settings: A Conceptual Overview ☆.” Satisfaction of Students’ Living Environment between On-Campus and Off-Campus Settings: A Conceptual Overview. Web. 24 Feb. 2016.

  • The Scholarly source above by Muhammad Hilmi Muslim is an article I got from the GSU library website that furthers the conversation on the impact of students that live on campus. The research in this article comes from Malaysia also just like my source above. This Source isn’t too into the effects of the physiological well-being of the students but more so on their satisfaction. Most of the research in the article are statistics from studios taken on students that lived on campus and then compared to students who don’t live on campus. The information in the article also shows the impact on the students GPA, which in many of my other articles I am using does not. This helps me with the remaining questions I needed to be answered for my topic and also this article gives more information overall than most other articles I have chosen from. Overall this source is reliable, and I know it is one of the most useful sources on my topic based off what I’m trying to convey to my audien

“Benefits of On-Campus Housing for Students.” West Texas A&M University: Residential Living. Web. 27 Mar. 2016. <http://www.wtamu.edu/student-life/benefits-of-on-campus-housing.aspx>.

  • The source Above is about Students living on campus and the things they can benefit from that most campuses offer. In the Article they are showing how staying on campus can improve grades, encourage students to participate in campus events, give students better opportunities at pursuing their careers, and provide them with a better chance of going to Grad School.  Also, the article explains how students interact with a more diverse population. Therefore, they become more open minded to different people, and that helps the individual grow.  I chose this source because it gave a different perspective on living on campus than I am used to seeing. The viewpoint of the author is shown because The whole article states that living on campus is beneficial and it doesn’t have anything to say about the drugs, violence, and bad influences that the student is going to encounter. This biased viewpoint is most likely trying to Help market Student housing for a particular college/ university; however, this position is important to my research because it shows how others may be affected by living on campus. The relationship that this source has with the other sources is that they all have an author with a different viewpoint on living on campus; However, isn’t a scholarly source, but it did come from a legitimate website.

Frost, Shelley. “The Disadvantages to Staying in Dorms.” The Disadvantages to Staying in Dorms. Demand Media. Web. 27 Mar. 2016. <http://education.seattlepi.com/disadvantages-staying-dorms-2614.html>.

  • Shelley Frost Entails the disadvantages to staying in Dorms In the Article “The disadvantages to staying in Dorms.” In the article, she gives specific details about how College dorms can distract the student and defeat the whole purpose of being on campus. She also states how the student doesn’t have enough privacy in as college dorm and that college dorms are cheating the student out of their money because they get a tiny space to live in, and they still have to leave during the breaks and can’t bring everything from home with them. Shelley frost’s article can help understand the rhetoric built environment with Atlanta because some students live in housing that is negatively affected by all the disadvantages They face due to the distractions, dorm limitations, campus restrictions, and constant pressure that campus housing puts on a student. I chose this source because it directly adds to the conversation about what are the pros and cons to students living on campus. The only flaws I can find in the article is that she doesn’t go over any of the benefits of living on campus but explicitly states that there are many.

“An Analysis of Atlanta, Georgia: The Bad and the Ugly.” An Analysis of Atlanta, Georgia: The Bad and the Ugly. Web. 27 Mar. 2016.

  • The Source above is a popular source from neighborhoods.com that gives an analysis of the City of Atlanta and the negative things that are found in the cities exterior environment. The author shows how the buildings and architecture are beautiful; however, the exterior of Atlanta is full of everything that describes poverty. This article adds more to the conversation about living on campus due to people only consider how housing affects students and not the environment outside of the housing. According to the article, Living in some parts of Atalanta is living in poverty, and that has a huge effect on students that actually venture outside of their dorms (which everyone does). The only flaws I can find in this article is that It includes information I don’t need such as why people come to Atlanta and what the reasons are for staying in Atlanta. However, The author does a great job of describing the effects of the environment on the people that occupy it which is useful for my research and adds to the conversation.

Boles, Jennifer. “The Architects of Modern Atlanta’s Design Is Human Event Talk Contemporary Design – Atlanta Magazine.” Atlanta Magazine. 2015. Web. 27 Mar. 2016. <http://www.atlantamagazine.com/designevents/the-architects-of-modern-atlantas-design-is-human-event-talk-contemporary-design/>.

  • The above article is an article from Atlanta magazine that entails the designs of the interior buildings and environment of Atlanta. It shows how the Architectural design In Atlanta is exquisite and elegant. The whole article is about how lots of buildings in Atlanta have superior designs. This article helps with the rhetoric environment argument that I am researching because it shows how the interior of buildings is misleading. They make people in it think they are in an upper-class location when they are living next to the homeless and next to poverty-stricken neighborhoods. This goes back to how students are affected because inside their beautiful buildings they feel safe, but when they step outside, they see what the real world looks like and many students aren’t used to this type of environment. All this affects the student because the beautiful interior distracts the student from where they are. This source relates to my other sources regarding the environment but doesn’t relate regarding the effects of not living on campus. Everything in the article is about interior environments and how it refers to the people that live in Atlanta.
