This is a map of the walk we did to the Civics Center that we took in the Honors 1000 class. We started off at the Honors College, and we moved towards the Commons, where we discussed the architecture of the many of the buildings in the area, as well as some of the well known architects that have worked on many of the buildings in Atlanta. The ultimate goal of the walk was to reach the Civics Center, located in what has been called Buttermilk Bottoms. Throughout the trek, we saw many of the “parks” and other features of the city, while also looking at the effects of urban sprawl. Finally, we went by the Marriott Hotel to look at the atrium, which was designed by the architect John Portman, to see some of the designs that have become influential.
The walk spread across several of the classes. As a way of practicing the mapping tools we will be using over the course of the semester, we mapped the path in our History 2110 class.
