The CSAW REU site is based on a competitive, nationwide search of highly-qualified undergraduate students. The CSAW REU site seeks students with: a deep interest in engaged, community-based research; an inquisitive and creative mindset; a willingness to work independently and part of a larger research team; and a desire to contribute to new directions in community geography scholarship. Previous coursework in geography, GIS and related disciplines is highly desirable, but not required. We also encourage students with skillsets in GIS, GPS, interviewing, qualitative data analysis, and/or environmental impact assessment. There is no minimum GPA requirement, but preference will be given to students with a 3.0 or higher GPA and who demonstrate significant potential and scholarly ability.
The CSAW REU site is committed to including students from all socio-demographic backgrounds, and will strive for inclusion of students from underrepresented groups, including women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and first-generation college students. Each student must be an undergraduate enrolled in a college or university in the United States in the fall of 2013. As a program funded by The National Science Foundation, the student must also be a U.S. citizen to participate in the REU site.
Student Compensation:
As part of successful participation in all aspects of the CSAW REU program, each REU student will have the following expenses paid:
Summer Stipend: Each REU participant will receive a $3000 stipend for successful participation in the seven week program.
Travel: Each REU participant will be reimbursed up to $250 for travel costs to/from the REU site. In the event travel costs rise above the $250 amount, students are encouraged to ask their home departments to offset any additional travel costs. Upon successful completion of the REU program and to encourage professionalization, presentation, networking and dissemination of project results, each REU student will also receive up to $750 in travel reimbursement to present REU work at a major national meeting.
Campus Rooms and Meals: REU participants will stay in GSU campus dorms free of charge. Students will also receive support to cover most of their meal expenses for the summer.
Public Transportation in Atlanta: Each REU participant will be provided with a MARTA public transportation pass for full access around the metropolitan area.
Required Texts: Students will be provided with three required books upon acceptance into the CSAW REU program.
