Jackson, Richard J. “The Impact of the Built Environment on Health: An Emerging Field.” American Journal of Public Health 93.9 (2003): 1382–1384. Print.
This article focuses on just how detrimental certain built environments can potentially be to one’s health. The emergence of liquor stores over the stagnant rise of schools and libraries is one main example mentioned. Also, there has been a positive correlation between the amount of miscellaneous infrastructure being constructed (e.g. housing and shopping centers) and cardiovascular diseases and obesity. There is more prevalence given to a new high-rise versus the building (or preserving) of a park or a playground. As futuristic as society may currently seem, there is always a chance to improve and plan ahead for the juxtaposition of a healthier and wealthier living regime.
“New Series: Emerging Technologies for the Built Environment.” COINS Global. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Feb. 2016.
There are four main types of ways that technology is essentially going to enhance the production of many more built environments. The first way technology will help is by introducing Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs). These buildings are going to create more energy to provide cleaner environments and a healthier global footprint for the world. The second way is by the production of Smart Windows. These windows are going to alter the amount of light that is allowed in by gradually tinting as needed, thus saving on energy throughout the building.. The third way is by the advancement of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). These materials will contain solar cells which will use the suns rays to generate electricity and will be directly embedded throughout the infrastructure of the building, not just placed on the roof. Last but not least, the fourth way advanced technology will further the built environment will be by the integration of Smart Cities. These cities will use central intelligence that is compiled from various devices to showcase the industry leaders as well as the up-and-coming players in architecture and construction.
“Doll’s Head Trail at Constitution Lakes.” History Atlanta. N.p., 9 July 2014. Web. 5 Feb. 2016.
Doll’s Head Trail obtained its infamous name due to the flooding of the South River which led to a slew of doll-heads washing onto the Constitution Lake premises. The emergence of these doll-heads created a sanctuary of sorts for the modern day artiste. The trail is also a booming wildlife habitat due to the soft, red clay of the excavation pits located in the center of the park. Many copperheads as well as deer ticks have been known to make their appearance at this extremely different built environment. The article also provides a detailed background into the history of the park curated by the South River Brick Company.
