Plaster

For the “Carving Plaster” Project, I created my abstract sculpture from plaster. I used numerous carving, etching, and shaving techniques to create a unique form and shape.

We first began by pouring plaster into a large bucket and mixing it with water until it was smooth and free of clumps. I then poured the plaster into a small box made of five pieces of foam. The plaster sat for a week and solidified. I used a mallet and a chisel tool to chop off large pieces of the plaster cube, in which began to take shape. The process was intense as it took power and precision while hammering away at the plaster. Once a decent amount of plaster was removed, I started to use finer tools to create craters and finer lines. Finally, I used a shaving tool to smooth out the rough texture of the plaster.

I learned how to work with plaster. The process of pouring and mixing plaster was soothing. I learned how to properly use a mallet and etching tools to sculpt an object.
