Located east of Atlanta, Old Fourth Ward is a historic neighborhood that was originally settled in the early 1800s and is the birthplace of prolific and honorable civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The neighborhood is surrounded by many historical sites and landmarks, which draws the attention of tourists and visitors in Atlanta as well as the neighborhood’s residents.

Some of the landmarks and sites that Old Fourth Ward is known for are the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic site, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Sweet Auburn Historic District, as well as recent developments such as Freedom Parkway and the ever-popular Atlanta Beltline Trail. The neighborhood contains houses and complexes ranging from the eloquent Victorian period to contemporary-designed modern abodes that visitors often are able to tour.

Old Fourth Ward, in recent years, has made many leaps in attempts to evolve and “redefine itself” and encourage “growth and community investment” (Atlanta, Old Fourth Ward). Historic Fourth Ward Park, designated in 2011, covers 17 acres of green space which includes a lake, a skate park, a playground, and more to unify the community and encourage community involvement.

The historic district is home to some of Atlanta’s favorite and finest restaurants and small businesses along with the neighborhood and park in hopes to attract more visitors and improve the community altogether.
