Snowflakes - charcoal drawing

Drawing Project 4 – Charcoal Drawing of Paper Creation

Snowflakes - charcoal drawing

“Snowflakes” April 2024

Medium: charcoal pencils #2, #4, #6, soft vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, precision eraser, on drawing paper

For this project, I used half of a piece of drawing paper to form a 3-dimensional paper creation (my creation was paper snowflakes). The creation was positioned on a large piece of black fabric, with lighting positioned beside it to provide subtle shadows. The other half of the piece of drawing paper was then used to draw the creation. I began by lightly shading the entire page with vine charcoal and gently rubbing the paper with a paper towel to obtain a soft gray background. I then used the vine charcoal and a precision eraser to sketch the creation. To add value, charcoal pencils were used for shading, and the precision eraser was used to whiten the drawing where light reflected from the creation; both the charcoal pencils and the precision eraser were used to emphasize the creases in the paper. Compressed charcoal was used to draw the black fabric background. I was challenged drawing the reflection/shadows of the light on the snowflakes and by the geometry and cutouts of the snowflakes, but in the end, it was a fun project.
